A few days ago we received word that my son-in-law was gravely injured when the vehicle he drove in Iraq was hit by a roadside bomb.

He faces a long recovery and may never fully regain the use of his right foot, yet he was one of the lucky ones in this incident.

One of his friends and team members was killed and another was grievously injured and fighting for his life in a hospital bed in Germany right now.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget the fact that so many men and
women serve to protect us and our freedom every day until
something like this happens to you.

Whether you agree with the current political climate or the
reasons we fight or not, it’s important to never lose sight
of the fact that our soldiers are in peril serving us.

Unless you have a son or daughter or husband or wife
serving, it may never cross you mind to really think about
the tremendous sacrifices every armed forces member makes
daily so we can remain safe and free.

However, what you may not realize (or even think about) is
that these young men and women are not robots – they’re
people.

They get scared and lonely and homesick just like you would
if you got separated from friends and family over thousands
of miles for months, sometimes years at a time.

But there is something we can all do to make their lives
brighter and bring comfort to them and their families no
matter how far away their duty station – and the Internet
helps us do it!

The USO (United Services Organization) has been helping to
support the troops ever since Bob Hope toured Europe to
entertain during World War II.

The USO continues its mission today by offering help,
support, and comfort to our troops both at home and abroad.

But the USO needs help constantly with both cash donation
and volunteer help to keep serving our troops.

If you can’t volunteer your time then they would certainly
appreciate a donation through their website.

You can even make your donation in memory of someone or in
honor of someone special to you.

This site provides a way to connect with troop support
organizations in your state.

Here in Virginia there are 40 different sites listed with
more information on how you can make a difference in the
lives of our troops and their families.

This site makes it possible for you to find a specific way
you can contribute.

With the holidays coming up, it’s even more important to
get involved with the effort to support our troops with
more than just a ribbon on a tree or a magnet on a car.

The best gift anyone can give is the gift of time, energy
and effort to make someone else’s life a little brighter.

Even if you just send a card, make a donation, or put
together a gift box, that simple act may lift the spirits
of someone who could really use a hug across thousands of
miles or right around the corner.

If you don’t do it, then who will?

  • Jon, my job from day to day is to make the world a more beautiful place, and whether other people’s jobs are to make the world a more efficient, a more educated, a more tolerant or just a cleaner place, yours is the most important – to make the world a SAFER place. And ironically, you do that by putting yourself in danger.

THANK YOU from Robin Hood country! (Nottingham, England)

Meanwhile, thank you also to Jim and the rest of the family, who have the similarly terrible burden of letting you go and waiting for you to return. THANK YOU too.

    Hi Jon,

I am a Filipino expatriate working in UAE. I learned from your father-in-law about the tragedy that befell among you and your team mates.

I feel sorry of what happened to you and your team and do appreciate the dangerous job that you guys there in the war front are doing for the sake of peace. Your sacrifice are not in vain.

I hope and pray that you will recover quickly and be united with your family soon.

    God bless you,
    Nitz Malaga

  • Hey Jon H.

As a Navy Retiree, I can tell you from experience that the hospital at Walter Reed is fantastic. Maybe not the hospital itself… but there are some “near miracle workers” there who are dedicated to making you well and getting your parts working as good as new… as fast as possible.

Hopefully you’ll make a SWIFT recovery… but if you get stuck there for a while, and would like to get out for a breath of fresh air, I just live an hour away and would be proud to drop by and take you out for pizza, dinner or whatever. Just hit reply to my email and let me know.

Your father-in-law has been helpful to me without ever knowing it and I appreciate that… and I definitely appreciate YOUR service.

Get well fast and remember my offer!

    Dave

  • Mary G:

    Dear Jon H,

Thank you for your service and your sacrifice. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you recover from your injuries. I have requested, and you will be on our continuing prayer list at my church, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston. (It is the church home of Former President George Bush.) I live just down the block from the church, and can hear the bells chime on the hour. I plan to use the reminder of the church bells at noon to pray for you. I’m grateful that you survived the attack and that you can be with your wife and child as you recover. I wish you a full, speedy recovery – and know that there will be a lot of people in Houston and all over the country praying for you and ‘pulling for you’.

    Regards,
    Mary G

    Hey Jon,

I just want to say thank you, it’s because of soldiers like you that we have the fortune to live in a “Free Country”. You guys are our frontline of defense and without the sacrifices of our armed services, we would not be here today. I personally want to wish you a speedy recovery, so you can enjoy your family and freedom. Thank You and God bless.

  • Karin Henderson:

Jon, as a Canadian, I am deeply grateful for your sacrifice. No words of mine will change your present situation. However I add my prayers to all the others and EXPECT complete healing for your and your colleagues. May God heal you and use you for His good to help others.
    Most gratefully.. Karin.

    God Bless You Sir.

  • Doug Golinski:

    Hi Jon,
I can’t thank you enough for your service to our
country. You are a true Great American Hero. Get
    well soon.

    Thank you Doug

  • Jon,

Thank you for serving us and our country by your presence and your efforts in an area of the world that is not only alien but far from home both physically and psychologically. My daughter was born at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1988, so I know it well. I had nothing but respect for the staff during the 14 years it was our family’s sole medical care facility. I pray that they serve you as well as you have served all of us.

As a former member of the US Army (1974-77), I served with a lot of people (and married a soldier) from the Viet Nam era. What we learned as a result of that episode in our country’s history has taught us some important lessons. Most importantly, I think, is that regardless of anyone’s political or philosophical views about war, the fact remains that people like YOU put their lives on the line every day — for us and for the people you were sent to defend and to help stabilize their society.

So saying “thank you” just doesn’t seem adequate, but my thanks come from my heart. I am praying for you, that no matter what physical outcome you have from your injuries, that you will keep a positive outlook as much as possible.

It’s the injuries we can’t see, however, that you must do all you can to heal from. Use every military and VA option available to you to get and keep your head straight, not only for your family and friends, but for yourself. If you can get past the “why me?” questions, especially because you survived when others didn’t, take comfort in this quote from Watchman Nee, regardless of your present spirituality:

“If God leads you to take the way that you know, it will not benefit you as much as if He leads you to take a way you do NOT know. This forces you to have hundreds and thousands of conversations with Him, resulting in a journey that will be an everlasting memorial between you and Him.”

Actually, we ALL need to take the path we don’t know when we come to that proverbial fork in the road. We spend so much of our lives doing things the same way we always have and wondering why nothing changes. As Dr. Phil likes to ask, “How’s that workin’ for ya’?”

When you get past this initial time of conflicting emotions, keep working toward a place of peace within yourself. In that place you will stop asking, “Why me?” and instead ask, “What have I learned from this, and how can what has happened be turned to good not only for me but for others?” The sooner you can get to this point, the sooner that new focus will help you to heal.

I can’t even begin to imagine the challenges you’re facing, except intellectually. I don’t know on a visceral level how I would react in similar circumstances.

But for a military man who’s breathed more sand than most landlocked people have ever seen, who’s had DI’s in his face, who’s had to eat field rations when a Big Mac supersized with fries would make a grown man weep, who’s endured the sound of mortar shells and car bombs and gunfire, who’s known loneliness and homesickness on the deepest possible level, who’s lost friends, who’s seen more suffering than most people do in a lifetime, who’s faced death square in the eye and come away alive — for THIS man, no challenge can’t be overcome because you ALREADY have persevered. There is nothing you can’t do now, especially with the love and support of family and friends.

Dig deep inside, Jon! Keep digging until you find the joy again, no matter how long it takes. It will happen sooner than you think.

I send you my best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery of body soul and spirit. And I look forward to hearing how everything turns out, what direction you decide to take, and the good that definitely will come of this, sooner or later. I’m praying for sooner.

    Deb Gallardo

    Psalm 91
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, [He is] my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, [and] from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth [shall be thy] shield and buckler.
    5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; [nor] for the arrow [that] flieth by day;
6 [Nor] for the pestilence [that] walketh in darkness; [nor] for the destruction [that] wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; [but] it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
    9 Because thou hast made the LORD, [which is] my refuge, [even] the most High, thy habitation;
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee up in [their] hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I [will be] with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Both of my son’s are Air Force. In the last 16 years they have been overseas many times. My Lord God Almighty watches over them and protects them. I pray that you will put your trust in God and thank Him for bringing you out and know that He has a plan for you.

  • David Smales:

    Hello Jim / John H

I understand that injury or death is “part and parcel” of being a soldier of a particular country and it’s Armed Forces.

This however, has little recompense for the remaining family of the “Soldier”.

We all need to appreciate that young men and women are prepared to give up their lives, in order to secure the future and freedom of their descendants.

    To this end,
I would like to applaud Jon H for choosing to protect all of our rights as individuals, by fighting for what is right.

    best regards

  • Susan:

    Hola PFC Jon H.

I wanted to write and send you all my best wishes for your recovery and that of your friends. I was profoundly sorry to hear about your injuries and the loss of one of your friends. You are all very brave to put yourself in harms way not only for your own country but also for the rest of us out here wanting a free and peaceful world.

I am glad to hear that you are on your way home and back to your family, I bet they can’t wait to see you, you must have their smiling faces around you by now.

Life takes a tremendous turn, a real jolt after something like this doesn’t it – and I hope that you will have all the time you need to both physically and mentally adapt to the new direction you go in. I don’t want to get all pushy right after telling you you should take time… but there is a guy I know who knows a heck of a lot about making great web sites and writing e-books ! Jim something or other…, sorry, sometimes there is strength in humour…

From a small Spanish island just off the northern African coast and I wanted to tell you, your family and your team members that you are all in my thoughts and prayers, especially now and over the coming weeks.

    God bless you
    Susan
p.s. Hola Jim, you don’t know me but thank you for helping me find my new direction.

  • Hi Jon,

Thank you and your comrades for your sacrifices for me and my family. As a veteran myself I know the feeling of loss when a buddy is killed. Thankfully most people will never have to go through that.

I wanted to keep this short…My prayers go out to all of you and your family’s to help you make it through this tough battle.

Thank you for being a HERO!!!!

    Sincerely,

  • Rildo Oliveira:

Jon, I hope You soon get better! And I really hope there will come a time when people will not suffer anymore under such injuries caused by the stupidity of the war, which take lifes of so many people, us-persons, iraqis and others. And all this just in name of what? Not peace!

I hope You get healthy! Pain is to be felt for those who died or have been injured, be they iraqis or not.

Wish You all the best! It means: a World in peace, without invasions, blindness and war.

    Dear Jon,

I just wanted to send you a note to let you know that your service is NOT taken for granted. If it weren’t for people like you, people like me wouldn’t be able to enjoy the freedoms that come with Democracy.

I wish you and yours a speedy recovery, and you will be remembered in my prayers. Please give my sincerest condolences also to your fallen comrade’s family.

    Love,

  • Jon.

I don’t know how gung-ho you are but if you need a lift from someone who has ridden the emotion rollercoaster of a soldier in war … he was in Falujah in Nov ‘04 … get to know David Bellavia.

I saw him this weekend on CSPAN-2 … he’s a VERY powerful and passionate speaker … co-authored a book called “House to House : An Epic Memoir of War.” I haven’t read it, but I will. I suspect he might help make you feel your service … and your sacrifice were worth it.

As for your injury … just take your time getting better. You have your whole life ahead of you. Seriously! Don’t be uptight. Be determined just to live life right no matter how long this will take.

Best wishes to you and your family.

A friend of mine was involved in a serious accident and was told he would never walk again — he told the doctor he would be the MVP in his rugby team the following year and his doctor just shrugged his shoulders

He affirmed his goals regularly, busted his butt and later was named MVP – others with less serious injuries are still not walking

You have made a terrific sacrifice for your country and it is greatly appreciated

I encourage you to dream big, leverage the support of your friends, family and professionals and make the best possible recovery

  • Jay & Carol Bach:

Hello Joh H. The internet has brought us closer together and we are so terribly sorry to hear of your misfotune. It is our hope that you have a speedy recovery. We want to pass along our condolences to you and ‘family’(Which includes the other members of the unit that were truly part of his family and his natural family” for your fallen fellow soldier. Fortunately we have never had to undergo such horrible feelings, however, we have a son who is career US Coast Guard and his wife who is career Navy. We were scared stiff for him when the Coast Guard was involved in that mess over there during the first skirmish during the early 90’s and then later for both my son and daughter-in-law who were involved with both, she in the Afganastan mess and he now on patrol working every day patrolling the coasts of America. We have them in our thoughts all the time, as we are sure that you are in your parents thoughts all the time. We can’t do much, even as parents but pray and lend support wherever and whenever possible. We understand, as best we can, what it takes for you guys and girls to be doing what you are doing and we are eternally grateful for your sacrifices in protecting this country. Sometimes when we are sitting at home and they talk about these terrible things we find tears in our eyes. We remember how often we have had special holidays when not only do they visit us, but find some of their military friends staying with us, as well. One Christmas we had three marines two coasties and a couple of navy sleeping all over our house, so we know about the military and how they take care of each other. You are always in our prayers. All of you.
May God, in his infinite wisdom, grant you peace and help heal the sorrows that come from injuries and deaths that have followed the terrible confrontations.

  • Hi Jon and Fellow Patriots!

My heartfelt thanks and admiration for a job well done with courage and the conviction to protect the rest of us by your efforts.

    Hi ya Jon
I know that there’ll be some tough times ahead. I was really inspired by the resilience Lance Armstring showed in his book “It’s not about the bike” Maybe you might be able to get a copy and get inspired/encouraged/motivated when you are riding the emotional roller coaster.
Best wishes to you and your family
    God Bless

Our prayers are with you and all at Walter Reed. That you voluntarily defend and protect millions in the United States (people you do not even know) speaks of great character, spirit and mettle. Our armed service men are the best and all we can do is thank you and pray for you and appreciate your gift to us. Get well soon.

  • So many things can go worng in life; thankfully, so many more things can go right.

  • Earl:

    Hi Jon,

I want you to know how profoundly grateful I am for you and the thousands of other men and women in the military who defend our country. All of us owe you a debt of honor for your commitment and sacrifice.

I also want you to know that I will be praying for you and your family during your time of recovery. I do not know your faith background, but as a follower of Jesus Christ, I will be praying that the God and Father of Jesus Christ will surround you with His love — a love that heals both body and spirit.

I pray that you will discover a truth that I learned a long time ago (I am 72 years old); that is, God can take the bad things that happen to us and transform them into good. It was often difficult for me to believe this when I was in the middle of agonizing events, but after passing through them, I could see how God used them to make me a better person.

Take hope in knowing that thousands of people like me honor you for your sacrifice. I shall look forward with eager anticipation for news of your recovery. Be sure to remind Jim to provide us with timely updates on your progress.

    Gratefully yours,

    Earl

  • I sincerely pray for your speedy recovery and when things get rough I could not think of a better place to look for strength and encouragement than in the 23rd Psalm. “The Lord is my shepherd….
As a Canadian I thank you for the service you and your buddies were doing for the improvement of people’s lives not only in Iraq but around the world.

  • Dear Jon,

Thank you so much for your service to our country. Your sacrifice humbles me. Know that you are in my, and my family’s, thoughts and prayers every day, as are all of the American military men and women, like yourself, who sacrifice daily for us all.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. A dear friend had a similar situation, and although the road to recovery was challenging, he is living a happy, healthy life now, and I wish that to you.

Please know that your bravery and courage is respected and appreciated. May your family and loved ones, and your beautiful son Johnny give you the strength and love to heal in all ways. It can be done! You can do it! Please feel free to contact me for inspiration from my friend’s story any time.

    With sincerest respect and admiration,

  • Hi Jim,

My heart goes out to you and your family as you deal with this brush with death. I too felt compelled to write a column when my son was about to die last October, and again after he died in November. So I know how you must have agonized over writing about it.

My son wasn’t in a war. But when we lose or nearly lose a loved one, we remember our mortality and that we must celebrate life as best we can and for as long as we can.
    Love and blessings,
    Neill

  • Jon,

Hang in there. Our prayers go out to you for a speedy recovery so you can quickly return home to your family. Be strong – there are many whose thoughts and support are with you.

  • Doug:

    Hi Jon,

I just want to thank you first of all for your service, and wish you a speedy recovery. I know it’s a hard job and somebody has to do it, but the troops in Iraq are doing a great job and need to hear it every single day.
Although I was not in the service myself, I have a son who will be in Iraq soon with the USMC and I will be thinking every day of his safety. While I’m praying for him, I will of course throw in a prayer for all the troops over there and in Afghanistan as well. May God be with you and protect you.

  • Hey Jon,

Sorry to hear about your injuries and the death of your friends. You got to be a brave person. I think of you guys everyday. It’s got to be tough and I appreciate what you are doing for us everyday. Hang in there. You are on my prayer list.

  • Mary:

Jon – Jim has a photo posted on his site of you with an
absolutely BEAUTIFUL baby on your lap. And the love beaming on your face tells me this is your child. Must also be the grandbaby that Jim is so head over heels in love with!
Children and grandchildren are our most precious possessions. They are what gives us strength and hope and comnfort. Our loved ones are who we do everything for in our lives. Love of family and love of country.
I feel that you have not heard it enough, but you are loved by many who have not met you. You are loved because Jim loves you, and his caring extends to his online “family”.
You are loved becsue you cared enough to go away from your home, your family and your comfort zone, to perfrom your duty – out of love for you family and country.
Not a day goes by that my husband Roger and I do not think about, care about and pray for the men and women who are giving so much to our country – and to a country whose people they did not know until they arrived there.
The good people in other countries also are appreciative of your efforts.
Our prayers go out to you and your family, and will continue to do so. We look forward to good news from Jim regarding your recovery.

    Roger and Mary

  • Dear Jon,

As you look to the future, however clouded at this moment by thoughts of the recent past, remember that you and your buddies are protected by God’s Love and Healing Grace and the collective prayers offered to the Lord on your behalf.

As you have no doubt seen many times before Friday’s tragedy, your fallen comrade, and all of them, now know the full protection of God’s eternal armor.

As your sacrifices are never forgotten or taken for granted by a world who appreciates your service to freedom, may you remember and uncover levels of peace for your present and future.

As you now begin to repair your body, allow the depths of your soul to heal your spirit and your mind to direct what in your heart you know as truth.

As God continues His watch over you, find strength in your family, friends, and those who love you anonymously, for we are here for you as well.

    Love Always,
    Cynthia

  • Dearest Beloved Jon and family,
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you’ve done. I will never know the extent of your sacrifice for our country. I do know that you, Jon, are safe at home and deeply loved by many.

I trust that God, the Angels, and your loved ones will assist in the healing process with you and my thoughts are for a full and speedy recovery for you.

Please know that I appreciate you and your family. Thank you.

    Many Blessings,
    Barbara

  • Jon,

Unfortunately the concept of self-sacrifice is lost on the majority of Americans today. And unless they themselves are serving in the Armed Forces or have a close relative serving, most will never understand the personal sacrifices made not only by the soldiers, but the families of the soldiers.

My family and I understand and extend to you, our personal gratitude for you raising your hand to volunteer to serve. We are also sending healing energy to you. Similar to the Tonglin practice mentioned in another post to you, we are sending Reiki energy.

No matter what happens from today forward, always focus on what can be.

Make sure Jim brings you a copy of “5 Steps to Getting Anything You Want” to help you during your recovery and rehabilitation…perhaps even some personal coaching…and much, much more!

    Good luck and stay positive.

  • Jeff L:

  • Jon,
May the grace of God be with you as you recover.

You and your entire family are in my prayers – and will be until you are fully well.

Thank you for your service for our country – blessings upon blessings be on you!

  • Dear Jon,

My heart aches for your loss and your fellow soldiers. Your bravery and sacrifice is of the highest order. Your honor is exemplary. I remember the Vietnam War for I am of that generation, and my father who is a doctor counseling and working with the young soldiers who can back – helping them rebuild their lives and heal with hope for their future. You will heal and please never under estimate what you have given, what you will give, and honor yourself.

  • Jon,

By the grace of God you survived a terrible
experience. I wish you a fast and speedy
    recovery.

Not many countries in the world have seen
first hand the courage and commitment given
beyond the call of duty by so many people
trying to do a job they believe in, and doing
their best every day to make a difference.

Believe me when I say there are people in the
world who greatly appreciate what you and
your team have been doing for us all.

My very best wishes to you and yours.

  • Gail Marceaux:

    Jon,

I hope you can feel all the love, prayers and good wishes for a speedy recovery, along with condolences for the loss of your brother-in-arms that are being sent to you and your fellow soldiers through this website.
My son-in-law also served in Iraq and I know from our family’s experience how hard it is for both you and your family to be seperated for such a long time under such trying circumstances.
There is a saying that goes something to the effect that, “God never gives us more to bear then He knows we can carry.” Take comfort knowing that God will be with you through your recovery time ahead as will the continued prayers and good wishes of everyone who has posted here.
I’ve been told that there are 6 degrees of separation from any one person to another so therefore, what touches you and yours, touches me and mine. Keeping in mind that we are all blessed by your sacrifice, with heartfelt sincerity I thank you for all you have done, and all you have given and will continue to give to the world as you are obviously a caring and giving person and I wish you and your family peace of mind and joy in life.

  • Dan:

Jon, we as Americans are proud of you and your comrades’ bravery and willingness to stand in the gap for freedom. I join all of us who enjoy every free breath we take and wish you a speedy recovery.

  • Hey Jon,

I’ve never served in a forward area or had any family that did — let alone had anyone I know injured while serving in that capacity. So I can’t possibly understand what you or your family is going through right now . . .

But I do understand that my life and the lives of my loved ones have been placed in your hands, and in the hands of all the other men and women who put their lives on the line to protect ours.

I thank you and your family for your sacrifice. God bless you in your recovery.

    With gratitude,

    Paul

  • First, I want to thank you for serving our country. Your efforts are truly appreciated!

Next, I want to advise you to focus on feeling better. Don’t focus on the injury, difficult as that might be, focus on feeling better tomorrow than you felt today. The universe will bring you more of that upon which you place your focus, I promise! As you turn your focus to wellness so the universe will return you to wellness.

    Love & Light,
    Nancy

  • Dear Jim,

I am sorry to hear the news about your son-in-law in Iraq. Please send my message to him on my behalf. Please get well soon. We appreciate your work to help the peace so we can have a better future. I know the army life, because I married a soldier.

My mother is over 80 years old, she always said USA is like a big brother. When USA is in trouble, people in the third world are in trouble too. USA and UK are the police of the world. I want you to feel proud that you are doing something for the country and the world.

We are proud of you. I know my mother will pray for you when she knows you are injured. We will pray for you for speedy recovery.

Cheer up and chin up. We are thinking of you. God bless you.

  • Jamie:

    Jon,

I want to thank you for your courage and for the great sacrifices that you and your buddies have made to defend the American people. Please take comfort in your family during this difficult time. I will remember you in my prayers. God’s speed in your recovery.

  • Jon,

Remember this, Only two defining forces have ever willingly offered to sacrifice their lives for another persons freedom, one was Jesus and the other is the American Soldier. Take pride in the fact that you are one of those few, those precious few, who willingly stand up and say, “I will support and defend!” I stand with you, as do all the other Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines, as brothers in Arms. To you Soldier I send a salute, a proud crisp salute from the position of attention… you my friend deserve nothing less. I will stand at morning colors and offer a salute for your fallen brother to the flag on whos’ colors never run. Cry often but laugh more for their is healing in both. Lastly I say; when you look down at your son and he looks back at you and looks you right in the eyes, remember that to him you are a HERO!

Get well soon, and that’s an order

I and my family GREATLY APPRECIATE the sacrifice you, your wife, kids and family have made by putting yourself in harms way for US. May you get well soon without any adverse side effects. And GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY as well as those that served with you and were not as fortunate. Again THANK YOU!

    Hi Jon,

It’s strange because I never read your father-in-law’s eMail and really should have un subscribed. But for some reason I read of your accident and was immediately prompted to pray for you and your buddies. My daughter just came down with MS and I’ve been doing a LOT of praying for her and will gladly add you to our prayers. I’d appreciate your prayers for my work too in India as we’re going through a very difficult time. I trust you will heal very quickly and enjoy your family with a long and fruitful life ahead. • M Kadair, Fairlawn Ohio:

    Jim,

I pray each night with my 3 sons 7, 5, and 2.5 years old… for the safety of these unselfish men and women. They enable us to live in this great country. Please send your son-in-law our thanks!

  • Hello Jon,

I heard of your ordeal from your father-in-law, Jim, and I’m so sorry to hear of your recent injuries plus what happened to your friends and team members in Iraq. There are no words to express regarding the loss of your precious friends who were with you that will suffice but only a “Selah” for the deep respect for not only you, but for what your friends have done in keeping America safe. Our country would not be safe if it weren’t for you sacrificing not only your very life for others but the painful relinquishing of being separated by your loving family. I’m sure there are many days that are filled with loneliness and just being scared not knowing what the next moment will bring being in such a volatile situation.

I pray, Jon, for your speedy recovery, comfort and peace not only for you but for your friend’s families. In spite of your current situation, the Lord says that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purposes. I know that God places inside the heart of a man the love of the land and His country to serve and protect it. It is surely a special calling that is not meant for all to do but only for those who have been equipped to do so by God. Apparently, you have a special calling on your life to serve in such a great capacity which would cause you to give your very life in order to serve and save others. There is no greater gift than to give your own life for a friend.

May the Lord heal you in total health, restore a sadden heart with joy because of your friends, Jon, and may you be comforted and greatly rewarded for the sacrifice you have made for us all.

    With deepest respect,

  • Jon,

I too had the privilege of serving our country as many have. The interesting thing is that in this great country we consider it a privilege. We’re not forced to do it against our will. We do it because we choose to do it. Because of that we do it with heart and courage and bravery. And for that I am glad for the future of our children that you and others like you chose to do your part and help keep the world (Not just the U.S.) a better place. It couldn’t be done without you.

My family and me are deeply sorry for any sacrifice you have made or losses you experienced. But if you choose to accept the situation, know that your family is counting on you to be the best regardless of your condition and keep a positive attitude, then you’ll have some great stories to tell your grandkids.

  • tom shubnell:

Jon, I want to add my name to the list of Americans who are indebted to you and the rest of the soldiers who defend us. You make us proud and free, something we can never repay you for.
Please get well soon and get back to your family.
    Thanks for your service.

Jon, After serving in Vietnam and picking up a load of shrapnel in my back I think I know what your going through
    both physically and emotionally.

I often wondered whether my effort(and others)was worth the

Years later in France in talking to an elderly man about the war he commented ” I always trusted the Americans to do
whats right”. I was so over come with emotions I couldn’t
    speak.

Now you are traveling down the same road. You might question
you and your buddies sacrfice in this war. Just rember that
you did “whats right” no other justification is required.

Turn to your God and your family to see you through your healing process. You have done your duty with honor!

    Capt.John Wallace–US Army Ret.

  • Melvin:

    Hey Dude,

I’m not a guy of great words so I just wanted to say that all of us back here in the U.S. are so grateful, proud, thankful, and blessed to have courageous people like you serving and protecting us – whether it’s day, night, peacetime or at war, we can thank you and the people of the U.S. Military for giving us the ability to live in the freedom of our great country.

May God bless you, your family, and help you all through these tough times. Words simply cannot express the gratitude that all of us Americans have in our hearts.

If I were to recommend anything, please get a copy of a book that has helped me through both tough times and good… If I had your address I’d send a copy over… It’s “Tough Times Never Last But Tough People Do” by Dr. Robert Schuller. It has helped me immensely in my life, and I hope you pick up a copy and it helps you, as well. God Bless you and your family. Take care man.

    Melvin

  • Jon,
Our family wishes first of all to thank you and all the other service men and women who protect us and others around the world, especially those who are fighting and in danger even now. We would all so much rather be fighting on foreign soil than here at home. If you were not there, “they” would be here.
Secondly, we send prayers to our great God for you, and healing energy to you.
God bless you and you family for the sacrifices you are making.

Robin Muff, Erwin Muff, and Hannah Muff salute you!

  • Don Lee:

    Hi Jon:

I’m up here on the cold side of the US/Canada border, but in a situation like this, that border simply does not exist. And as you may know, our guys and gals are doing the same job in Afghanistan. You have lots of good wishes coming your way from this side of the border to help you get well very soon and get back to your lovely family. Take care.

    All the best,

    Don

  • Charlie Lafave:

    Hi Jon,

I am so sorry to hear about your serious injury. I want to thank you for your service, and all you and your friends have done to defend our way of life and to uphold the honor of the US military under trying and extremely dangerous circumstances. On a personal note, I want you to know that though your recovery may take some time, I’m sure you’l one day be healthy again. I personally had my heart stop in a remote third world country when I was working for the US government when I was just 24. I didn’t know if I’d ever make it home. I’m sure you know what I mean. And yet today, that terrible time in my life is a fleeting memory, and my service as proud a memory as I’m sure yours one day will be. Here’s wishing you the same speedy recovery I once had, and a final heartfelt thanks for your service to our country.

    Charlie

I so much appreciate what you and so many others have done for us. Your MANY sacrifices ranging from small to HUGE that help protect the rest of us. Be well soon.

  • Dearest Jon,

As the wife of a Korean vet and the mother of a Desert Storm vet, I simply had to share your story with them. We are all very proud of you for being brave enough and patriotic enough to go to Iraq to fight for a defenseless and down-trodden people. And for heeding your call to duty.

Bravery is not shown by mouthing off on the internet. It is demonstrated by soldiers like you who put your life on the line in service to your country.

You have our prayers for a speedy recovery and our gratitude for all the risks you took on our behalf.

Our spiritual beliefs say that the Lord has spared you for a mighty and powerful service in the future. The time is coming when we will all need to be brave. We will appreciate your example when that time comes.

We send love, gratitude and healing wishes to you and your family.

    Again, Thank you,
    Don and Brennan Kingsland

  • Larry Baisden:

    Jon,

In 1971 by father, mother, siblings and myself traveled to Walter Reed to see my brother Roger that was medivaced from Vietnam to Germany to Walter Reed due to injuries he received.

They good news is that just as he recovered, so will you. You have an excellent support system in with your father-in-law and family. I hope you will take advantage of them and not try to carry the burden of your injuries alone. While they may not comprehend all that you went through in Iraq, or all the guilt you may (wrongly) feel that you survived while your comrade did not, their love of you will be far more important. Use that as your strength. If you do, I promise you this too you will overcome.

    Get better soon.

    Larry Baisden

  • Joyce Petrotta-Abdalla:

    Hello Jon,

I am living in Egypt and know how it feels to be far away from family and friends. It is scary when something goes wrong or I am ill. The difference is I am here by choice and I am not in a war trying to protect freedom for the world.

Please accept my humble thank you for your great sacrifice. I will add you to my prayer list for healing, health and happiness.

May God richly bless you and all of our troops!

    With all Sincerity,
    Joyce

  • Jennifer:

    Jon-

I justed wanted to say thank you for your service and sacrifices for our country, her people and personally for my family especially my children. We don’t say it enough publicly but I know there are countless Americans that feel the same as I do and really do care and appreciate all you and your fellow soldiers are doing. My brother is getting ready to deploy and I have countless friends who are also serving in Iraq and elsewhere worldwide.
So as I say to him as gets ready to go. Thank you…you might not be able to see it all the time and there will be days when you question everything but it is during those times if just take a moment to look around at the all the kids that have a hope of terror free future because of the work you have done it may lessen your burden.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I would love for you to pass onto him my sincere thanks for the work he did for our country in Iraq and to know that there are a lot of people here that truly appreciate the risks he took. • There are no words that can adequately express enough gratitude to the brave men and women like you who have chosen to put their lives on the line for freedom. I extend my deepest thanks to you for your service to our country. Our hearts and prayers are with you for a complete recovery.

And, please know that despite what may come over the air waves, there are many, many other Americans who are grateful and thankful for all our brave men and women. I am proud and honored to take a few minutes every day on my live radio show to recognize and salute all of our Veterans. I thank those who have served, those who are serving, and especially those in harms way.

George Washington once said, “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their Nation.”

Please get well soon, and thank you again for your service to our country.

  • Jon,

Please know my good thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

    You are a true HERO!

    Get well soon.

May God Bless you and keep you and your family in His hands.

  • B J:

Hi Jon, know that you and your friends, family, comrades are in my prayers daily. I can only hope that you brave guys and gals understand that the nay sayers are in the minority and the rest of we Americans appreciate and respect what you are doing – and are PROUD of that fact also.

Please think pleasant thoughts and take hold of your emotions and know you’ve got so many friends pulling for you to get well and spend a beautiful, healthy and wonderful life from here on.

God bless and keep you safe. It’s because of you that I have the right to say what I say. Thanks and many hugs.

  • Myra:

Hi Jon and all your family,

I want to add my prayers and thanks to you and your family. First to say Thank You for all that you willingly sacrifice for the good of others. I know it is not easy and discouragement can come quickly. Take heart and know that there are many of us out here who deeply appreciate what you do for us. We are not a military family but live very near to the Marine Corps Base here in Hawaii. We have been blessed to get be a part of many of the families there and “adopt” several of the young guys. We have spent many times in prayer over them. We are blessed to hear reports from them of the things God is doing in their lives and also in this war.
I am sorry to hear of your injuries and would like to add my prayers for your speedy recovery.

“Father God, pour out your blessings over this family. I pray for your healing to flood over the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of this family. Set your angels to watch over them Lord, and give them comfort and courage. Lord, cover them with your peace. As this family searches for answers and truth in this time of need, give them wisdom, knowledge and revelation of you. Amen”
    Ephesians 1:17-21

  • Nathan:

    Hey Jon,

I just wanted to say thanks for your dedication and commitment to our country. We all should feel proud and honored to have people such as yourself willing to go the extra mile to help protect our way of life as well as protect those not as fortunate as the people of America have become.

As you know, for several years now, the US military has been an all volunteer force made up of both men and women from all walks of life. Our troops come from not only the US, but also from many countries around of the world. No longer are we “drafted” into the militay, but we come to it willingly. It is out of a sense of duty and patriotism that most of us come to our decision. We do it because we feel that we can make a difference.

It takes a very special person to serve our Nation today and I feel privileged to write these words to you, for you are such a person. You, and each one of your friends, are very special people.

I wish you a speedy recovery and may you and your family be witness to the blessings of God!

    And again, thank you!

    Nathan Barrick
    USAF 1975-1994

  • Hi Jon – I’m Canadian. We don’t have troops in Iraq, but our guys in Afghanistan are facing dangers similar to yours.

I’m a mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, and I can’t imagine the agony of having a son, son-in-law or grandson in peril every day, praying for their safe return, and always wondering what life in combat must be like for loved ones. Trying to wrap my head around what it must be like to be a soldier experiencing fear and horror on a daily basis.

My family and friends and I often talk about the war, and its cost to men and women in the military and their families. “Thank you” seems so inadequate to express our feelings. Jon, I hope you heal completely and quickly, and that you enjoy a long life filled with happiness and success.

If you are able, please convey to all of your brave military colleagues that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized, acknowledged and held dear by not only the American but the Canadian public. You are all in our minds and our hearts and we send positive energies to protect and heal you, and hope that you will all be home very soon.

  • Bryan Waters:

    To PFC Jon H Jon,

It is with the greatests of admiration that I have the privilege to address you as you return from your post that stood between my family and those who wish us harm.

When I look into the eyes of those I hold most dear and worry deeply about the world we live in it gives me courage & strength to know that there are men like you and those that stand with you. Men that are “Extrodinary”, who exemplify what real heros are made of, who’s willingness to put themselves in front of a bullet to protect my family defines the meaning of “Courage and Love of his fellow man”.

Words can not express the gratitude and respect I have for you, your service to this counrty and the liberties you defend on my behalf. As this country looks for leaders, men of courage, people who say what they mean and mean what they say. People of action not words thay have only to look to you and those who walk with you. You are the AMERICA I know and love.

You have stood tall and kept america safe and now is the time for america stand for you.

I am but one man but I can tell you that there are thousands upon thousands of others who like myself are heavy harted because of you injuries and pray for you speedy recovery.

If you stand in need of anything, Jim, has my email and I would be proud to do whatever I can to see that your needs are met. Again thanks for the opporunity and privilege to address you.

  • Frank:

Jon,When I heard the news of your injury today, I cried. This is not easy for me, “a guy” but I’ll say it anyway. Although I do not know you personally I wish to THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Just this morning, as I drove my 9 and 11 year old girls to school, we had this conversation. My 9 year old aske, “Dad, do you know anyone who has gotten injured in the war?” I told I do. Then she asked how do people get picked to fight? I told her they are not picked, THEY ‘because of their LOVE of country, freedom and other strangers they do not even know’choose to takeup arms and fight for you (meaning my daughters) and me and your mom so that we may live free and never know what it is like to live in a country of evil. They understood. I then said, “that is why it is important to not only thank these great men and women EVERY chance we get, but itis MOST important to keep them in our constant prayers. Jon, you ARE in our prayers. God, ‘knows’. He will bless you and your family over and over. Our prayers are for youe speedy recovery and healing, and get back to your wife and son.
    God Bless

    I served in the Army ‘81 – ‘85.

It’s too easy for many people to go through their daily lives and consciously not think about their brothers and sister, moms and dads, aunts and uncles are constantly fighting the enemy in often terrible conditions.

Thank you for everything you have given and for your friends, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

How you’ve served your country will not be forgotten…
    you’re a HERO!

God Bless You with a speedy recovery!

  • Terry Russell:

    Dear Jon,

I know the pain and suffering you are going thru is hard to bear, but I hope you will also count your blessings that you
have that you have a loving family who support you and love you as well. I live in Canada and I feel fortunate that we have our own armed forces who defend our way of life just like you and your comrades do for your country. I wish you a speedy recovery from your injuries and my well wishes.

    All the Best!

    Terry Russell

  • Hi Jon,

Reading about your experience opens my heart and brings tears to my eyes. You see, I was an Air Force bride, and my husband served in Nam after we got married. So I really “get” your sacrifice.

May you and yours receive all the comforting you need; and may you know that you aren’t alone during this test.

You will come through this, and someday it will be a memory. But it will be one that remains in your cells and gives you a sense of compassion for those who are suffering. That is the gift something like this gives; although it might be hard to know it now.

Know that you are loved, and wished a speedy recovery.

    Warmly,

    Batiyah

  • Joyce:

  • Jon
As the father of a Marine who served in Afghanistan and returned home safely, I want to thank you for your sacrifice. We at home have our freedom because of your bravery. No words can diminish your pain and rehabilitation, so let me just thank you again for keeping my family safe and free. God’s speed in your recovery.

  • Arlene Gregory:

Your sacrifice and service in the name of all people of the United States is highly valued. As you make your way through the months ahead, please know that we are a grateful nation, not matter what the political climate may be. We are who we are and what we have achieved because of many generations of dedication to our country.

One of our family members was similarly injured in January of 2006; like you, he was treated on site, flown to Germany, then to hospitals stateside. With the medical and surgical skill availible, Micah not only survived, but did so with both legs restructured, and eventually taught to walk once more.

At his October 2006 wedding, the entire congregation stood to see him put his crutches aside and make his slow walk to greet his bride at the altar. Not a dry eye in the house.

Our family knows well the struggle that you and your loved ones have ahead of you… please know that our strongest positive thoughts and prayers are on their way to you.

God keep you safe… and your family strong.

    Arlene and Jim Gregory

Dear Jon H I have a son Jon R. He is in his fifties now and I am 90 years old. I am a veteran of WW11, When you get a chance I hope you will look up the amazing results derived from proceedures known as Emotional Freedomm Techniques. The web site is http://www.emofree.com. I am using a technique for you that is called surrogate tapping. Combined with prayer it is the most powerful healing modality for long range healing that exists. The litterature from this organization is replete with inspiring reports of the many ways its proceedure are helping people. I am a subscriber to some of your father-in-law’s products. I know him only accross the internet. He comes accross as a sincere, honest and friendly person. You are fortunate to have him as a father-in-law. Perhaps he will look up the info I described and get it to you. There is an 80 page manual of instructions and its free. Be of good cheer. You have many well wishers for you, including me.
God bless you, Great Grand-Daddy Jack

  • Thanks for your service.

  • Igal Karuf:

    Hi John !

I won’t comment here about politics because this is not important right now what is important is that you hang in there for yourself and most importantly for your family !

I have a short story for you that gave me strength while I was recovering after a serious car accident that kept me in hospital for 3 months , asking myself some of the questions you probably ask yourself right now.

“An old man and his son worked a small farm, with only one horse to pull the plow.one day the horse ran away. “How terrible,” sympathized the neighbors, “What a bad Luck.” “Who knows whether it is bad luck or good luck,” the farmer replied. A week later, the horse returned from the mountains leading five wild mares into the barn. “What wonderful luck!” said the neighbors. “Good luck ? Bad luck ? Who knows ? answered the old man. The next day, the son, trying to tame one of the horses, fell and broke his leg. “How terrible, what a bad luck!” the neighbors announced again. “Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows ? The army came to all the farms to take the young men for war, but the farmer`s son was of no use to them, so he was spared.”

Good or Bad ? You decide !

Taken from a Book I really advice you to read – “Way Of The Peaceful Warrior” By Dan Millman, especially now ! when you need all the strength you can get to win your final battle – The Battle for your Full Recovery.

  • Al Sinden:

    Hi Jon, Welcome home!

I know this isn’t the way you wanted to come home to your son and family, injured, hurting and grieving for your comrade. No, I wasn’t there, so I can’t know what it was like for you and your comrades.

I’m going to make a suggestion that may sound really dumb. Write down what happened, what you and your comrades were saying, doing, what you all were planning for your next bit of off-duty time while you were in that vehicle. Put it away.

In about a week, take it out and read it. Then, write a note or letter to the parents and family of your comrade who was killed. Include some of the little things about him and/or that last ride. Give them something about him to cherish, whether his fierce patriotism or wild sense of humor.

Hearing from you will help them with their grieving. It will also help you as you begin your healing journey.

As soon as you can, hold you wife and son in your arms. They are why you need to get your life back into some kind of working order. They are the future. Your injuries will take time and therapies to heal and recover. So will you as a man.

Let at least a few others know what’s goung on with you as your journey to wholeness progresses. You do NOT have to go it alone.

May you and yours get through this with love, tears and laughter. They’re all a part of life. Best wishes, thoughts and prayers.

  • Dear Jon,
I hope that you heal quickly and get to spend a joyous holiday season with your family. You have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! And we are very thankful that you and your fellow solders have made our country safer.
Let’s hope that this next year will be your best one yet- full of joy, love and great health.
    Kathy

  • Pam:

    Jon H.

I want to let you know that my prayers and thoughts are with you. I also want you to know that I appreciate the many sacrifices you and your family have made. Choosing the life of service that you have chosen is something many people are not willing to do and you are appreciated more than you can know. I wish you a complete and faster than expected recovery. Also, remember how many people are wishing you the best.

  • Jon,

It’s hard to put into words from a computer what you’re going through. But please know that it’s not just us who support you and wish you well. God is with you every step of your journey and he has an amazing purpose for you. We can’t pay you back for what you’ve given to the entire world, but God can. You will be rewarded for your actions and while it may not seem believeable that someone you’ve never met and never will meet truly cares, I promise you we do and we will continue to pray for you and your family.

    All the best!

  • Jodie:

    Jon,
Are there really ‘words’ people can say to truly express our gratitude and appreciation for you? That’s my new project.
Until I come up with that word, all I can say is
“Thank You, from the bottom of my heart”. I wish you a full and speedy recovery! God Bless.

  • Hi Jon,

We have the best troops in the world and get well soon.

    God bless the USA.

    Howard

  • Little Brother,
I am a retired soldier. My 25 years of service included Viet Nam, so I have some feel for your situation and your anguish over the loss of friends. Let me just say, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! It’s guys like you who give me continued hope for our country!
    Chuck

  • PFC John H,

I spent three years working MWR at various BIAP sites–Victory, RPC, Stryker and Cropper. I want you to know that as a 53 year old civilian mom, I have an insight as to the absolutely amazing things you guys are getting done in the Great Sandbox, and it has been an honor to serve with you. I am now home, and am in the process of writing a book, which is a collection of soldier stories, terp stories, Iraqi stories, and its purpose is to get the true word out. It is called a Ballad for Baghdad, and should be out by February. The reason for the book is this: I gave my word that I would tell your stories because Cranky News Network won’t. Bottom line, it’s the least I can do. You are in my prayers, and may God bless you with a speedy recovery, body, soul, mind and spirit.

    Your MWR Mom,
    Ali Elizabeth Turner

  • Harold "Skip" Nusbaum:

    Jon,

It’s with a heavy heart that I hear of your injury and the loss of your buddy. I was also a serviceman during the Vietnam era. It is with the “deepest respect” that I write this note to share with you that there are a GREAT number of people who have the deepest admiration for what “You and your fellow servicemen” have done for this country! Never forget that you have made a difference in our lives, our country and our freedoms that many take for granted!

I salute you Sir! … and the rest of your family that stands behind you, such as Jim…

    May God Bless You All!

    Skip Nusbaum
    Atlanta, Ga.

  • Hello Jon,
First I would like to thank YOU and all the troops from around the world that have committed themselves to keeping our world safe and free.
As a person living in a small town in Canada the ‘war over
there’ was somewhat of a mystery and there was no connection to it for any of us till recently. One of our own commanders went over for 15 months.
He sent back weekly reports for our weekend newspaper (it really is a small town :-D ) and we were all both enthralled and yet horrified at the same time by what he wrote…the reality of being there…of actual fighting with/against other human beings…of the fear when one heard of death nearby…the joy of saving a life that was thought undone…things we at home could never visualise because we were not there. His reports gave us all a glimpse of this horror that we never would have had.
I thank my Creator that we do not have to live that life.
I ask Special Blessings for all those who are serving our countries both now and in the future.
I especially ask that you Jon and your family are given the strength you need on your healing journey.
God does not give us more then we can handle…but sometimes the burden does seem huge. That is the time to reach out as your father-in-law is doing and share it with others to lighten the load.
Blessings to you and yours…our prayers are with you!

    Lynda

  • Cheryl Quibell:

    Dear Jon and families,

I am so sorry that this tragedy has come upon you. It shouldn’t have to be this way. It must feel like you are passing “through the valley of the shadow of death” as in Psalm 23, but you can go “through” it. Jesus said that He would never leave us nor forsake us. Sometimes we ‘feel’ that He has forsaken us but He never does. They are just feelings and feelings don’t make it so. Jesus often said “Don’t be afraid”. Be courageous as you have done.

Here, in Canada on Vancouver Island, we thank you for keeping us safe also. My husband and I are so grateful that you take on this job when very few are willing to do anything that will be a cost to them, and it is costing you dearly. It shows great character and a great heart which is what God looks for above all else. Trust Him.

I sincerely recommend that you go to Sunrider International.com and get on their basic foods to help in recovery. They were the one instrument in bringing my husband back from near death two years ago.

    Praying for all of you,
    Bruce and Cheryl

  • Steve:

    Jon -
First, thank you for your sacrifice and dedication not only to your comrades-in-arms but also to your country. Your devotion to duty can only be acknowleded but never fully re-paid.

Second, welcome home. I am sorry to hear about your injuries but very pleased that you are now home and able to begin your recovery surrounded by those who love you the most.

No matter what types of things you may have been hearing in Iraq about the attitudes concerning this war, please realize that this country’s devotion and support for all our troops has never been in question.

I’m sending you my best thoughts and wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

    Steve
    Col. USAF (ret)

P.S. Give your son a big hug for me.

  • Cathy:

PFC Jon – My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I thank you for what you and all of our service people are doing for us and our country!

  • O D Loretta onebright:

    Hi Jon;

It is always saddening when one is injured especually when in service for our country.

We pray you will have a spedy recovery and would like to project a thought for you to help it along. Our thoughts are energy and are projected to the universe and return to us a 100 fold, so whatever we wish for is energy in action, therefore it is beneficial to keep positive thoughts and expressions. So in your healing process, keep positive thoughts and attitude and positive healing will take place. All words and thoughts are energy. Slmething I learned late i life, but depend on it faithfully today, which was hard for this old WWII vet to master.

The Bible clearly states:”What so-ever the mind of man can conceive and beleive, it can do”. The choices are in our hands.

May God always bless America and the men and wemon like you who help keep it safe.

  • Dear Jon,

Thank you for your contribution to this country and people like myself. We are all very proud of your dedication! We will be pulling for you and your family and keep you in our prayers for a speedy recovery!

    God Bless You,

    Raymond

  • Hi Jon H.,

We don’t know each other, but we are brothers. I was a Navy Corpsman during the Vietnam era and did my time with the U.S. Marines.

I know this is a hard time for you right now, but believe me it will get better. My advice to you is to get selfish and fight with everything you have, for YOU.

While you’re fighting, there will be roadblocks.
I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it. Your doing this for YOURSELF, and your family.

    Hang in there Bud.

Thanks for the sacrifice you’ve made, and understand that we as a nation are behind you God bless you, you’ll be in my prayers.

  • Ralph Jones:

Hi Jon: I want you to know that every time we hold church services prayer is always made for you and all the other brave men and women who are in harms way. • Suzanne:

    Hi Jon,

“Thank you” doesn’t seem to be quite enough to say when you guys are putting your lives on the line for our freedom. But I shall say it anyway – THANK YOU!

Rest up, heal well and you are in my prayers for a full and complete recovery.

God’s blessings on you today and every day.

  • Hey there hard-charger,

As a Marine, (one a Marine ALWAYS a Marine) I understand where you might be, as I was medically retired after surviving a skydiving accident in 2004.

However, despite my injuries and disabilities, I have acheived more success and greatness (if at the least in my own eyes) by keeping true to myself and my loved ones. My gift to you is a simple 7 words spoken by Winston Churchill, and I encourage you to follow them to have all the success you seek:

“Never Give up, Never, EVER give up!”

Dear Jon, This household has so much respect for the men and women who serve us. I too have one son in the Army, and one joining the Navy, My prayers go out to all, but today this one is for you and your family.
Dear Father you see the injury’s that Jon has, body and spirit. I ask that you create what needs to be restored and let the healing begin this hour, comfort him when he goes through the battles of the lose of his comrads, give wisdom to his family to help him make right choice’s, send warriors to minister to him when needed and let him know Your divine presence is there. Your word says “many are the affictions of the rightous, but, I healed them of them ALL” – the enemy comes but to steal kill and destroy, but I come so you may have Life – what so ever any two ask of My Father which is in Heaven and believes they have it, it will be given to them – Father we ask now that Jon be healed body, mind and spirit in the Name of Jesus.

    Dear Joh (& Jim)

Sometimes we get caught up in the little things in life that we forget about what is really happening in the world around us.

Jim, you have brought the real world to many of us, in the scariest way… Thank you for your love and concern for Jon, to motivate us to write.

    ******

Joh; My mother-in-law once told me that “God does not give us things that we cannot handle or withstand”

My reply to her was ” I wish God did not think I was so tough!”

I think that God must think you are an incredible person, and you will survive this and it will make you strong…

In the meantime… love a lot, laugh a bit and share what you can… you have a very caring family and they will help you, I’m sure.

God Bless, and thank you for your service and conviction… the world is less scary because of people like you!

  • November the 11th is ‘Poppy Day’ here in the U.K. The poppies are a reference to those growing on ‘Flanders Fields’ during the horror of the first world war. I never have a problem putting cash in the collectors tin for my poppy – if someone is willing to go out there on my behalf and risk their lives – it’s the best bargain I’ve ever found.

  • Will:

I believe in the power of mass thoughts, prayer, etc. so I add my best wishes for you to this group. Thanks for your service and dedication!

I’m the father of a soldier also in the same situation, he served one year in Iraq and when i thought he was safe he recieved orders to go back this March. He has 3 children and wife in Germany now. He also watched his buddies get hit by roadside bombs (not as lucky as you though).
I understand that you have lost some ability to use your foot. Consider it a blessing, because you will most likely get to watch your child grow up.
My other son is only 25 years old and was diagnosed with lukeimia about three years ago, he also has a wife and 3 children, but due to his circumstances, he most likely will never see his children graduate High School. Consider yourself lucky.
My prayers are for you and your buddies and all people sent to war, for them to heal and come home to their families. I think we all have the same desires in life. To be with our families and to enjoy a life of peace and love.
May God continue to walk beside you and all of his children that are forced to make a sacrifice. One final note; peace starts with forgiveness. Sometimes that can be very difficult when the ones we should forgive have left us with so much to think about. I know this personally for my son is still on dangerous ground along with his family and their concerns. God Bless You
    Rob
Proud father of a son still in the line of fire.

  • Art Gahagan:

    Dear Jon,

There are not words to express my apreciation for your efforts. Never lose site of the fact that you became a “hero” the day you stepped into harm’s way, for the benefit of us all. Less than 2 out of every hundred of us in today’s society, take that risk. It may be hard to consider yourself a hero, but try to think of that when those ugly “survivor guilt” thoughts creep in, and they will. I only am aware of your father-in-law through internet marketing, but having been a soldier in a foreign land, I’m aware of the bond’s you’ve formed. I don’t even have to say anything, you already know “job well done.” Here is a link that I hope will help in your recovery.

with all the courage you need in the days to come for a
witness to his mercy and grace to heal you and all the others who were injured along with you.

    God Bless,

Sometimes You Have To Choose A Song

    Softly falling down…
each drop a symphony of sound
as it hits the tin roof
    tap . . . tap . . . tap.

It can sound just like a sad song with a slow beat…
the kind that makes you daydream
    and feel sad and sigh…
as you think of what might of been or could be in your life.

Or maybe it is a happy song that brings back sweet memories…
    tender thoughts and special smiles
thinking of someone who makes your heart beat faster…
and your laughter ring with happiness and joy.

Or maybe it is a love song…
    with sweet and soft lyrics
    tender and romantic and sensual…
that makes you think of dancing in the rain.

Only you can decide which song…
is the one you are hearing
    which music soothes your soul…
and which song you want to sing along with.

Sometimes, you have to choose a song…
    and the choosing isn’t easy.

    God Bless and speedy recovery

Hello Jon H. , – Thank You for Your’ service to Our U.S.A. – Heard about your situation in Iraq, thru Jim E’s site. Hope and pray that you will heal and that You and Your’ Family will be fine. Thanks again Fellow PATRIOT! Sincerely, – Joe Ward

  • Lori:

    Jon,

On the day you boarded your flight to Iraq you had no idea what awaited you. You boarded that flight and accepted the difficult tasks ahead of you, no doubt uttering a silent prayer asking for strength and guidance.

On the day you boarded your flight back from Iraq you had no idea what awaits you now. You boarded that flight and are now attempting to accept the difficult tasks ahead of you as you recover emotionally and physically.

Every step we take in the journey of our lives is a step we were destined to take. Some cry out for relief and beg for mercy, some embrace the challenge and grow in body and spirit.

You embraced the challenges that awaited you in Iraq, and I hope you will embrace the challenges that await you during your recovery.

No card, gift package, speech, or blog post can heal your wounds, either emotional or spiritual. The healing is within you.

Please know that healing energy is flowing to you and to every member of the military (and their families) in every corner of the world who serve with heart, devotion, and willingly sacrifices their own comfort to offer comfort to others.

In your service you sought to heal the wounds of countless Iraqis who have suffered unimagined horrors and deprivation for generations. You saw injustice and refused to cower in the face of evil.

Your service is a light in the darkness of oppression. Look into the stars and remember that other lights burn beside yours, other voices are raised in prayer along with yours, and that no matter how alone you may feel in a moment you are not alone.

There is no greater blessing than the opportunity to be of service to your fellow man. As I pray for your recovery and perseverance, I will also pray that some day I will have the opportunity to be of service you as you have been of service to me and the world we all share.

  • Jon,

It is hard to get a lot of e-mails wishing well when you have the injuries you do. The way I see it as a Vietnam Vet myself, you have two choices. One is to follow the negative aspects of what is happening to you, and let it take you where ever it does, or to learn from this experience and use it to help others who need support to move forward. You are an integral part of a very positive and forward thinking family. Your recovery will be swift and I am sure you will take this lemon and turn it into lemonade. If you can help others like yourself to do something positive with their excperiences, then you will have truly healed from this experience, and the rewards will be beyond your wildest dreams.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Attract the proper energy and you will find a quick recovery.

    Good Luck,

    Larry

  • Jon,

I never took the opportunity to sign up and serve. I look back on it now and wish I would have in some ways. Then I think of people like you. After I think of people like you, I say a two-part prayer.

The first part is thanking God for you. I’m glad you had the guts, the determination and the patriotism to actually go down and sign up.

The second part is a prayer for your safety, your influence and your mind. This part simply means that you stay strong physically and emotionally.

I want you to know that there are those of us that are genuinely thankful for your service. I love this country and, without people like you, Jon, I wouldn’t even have the choice to sign up or not. I enjoy a wealth of freedom. I enjoy that freedom because of the sacrifice that you have given. I can not imagine for a second what you’re going through. But I can tell you this. You are in my prayers. You are being thanked daily. And you are a REAL hero in they eyes of me, my family and my friends.

I don’t know you, brother. But I know you put it all on the line for me and my family. That’s enough for me to write the small entry to say thank you. I probably won’t get to meet you personally. But if I do, you’ll get a hug and a handshake from me.

Your service and sacrifce is not in vain. Jim said your name is Jon H. I’m not sure what the “H” stands for, but we’ll just call you ‘Hero’. It’s true and it’s what we know you for.

Praying for you, your team and the families!

Finally! figured out HOW to reply to this blog thing!

Hello Jon, my family and I are deeply grateful for the sacrifice you and your military family have made in the name of Freedom and Democracy. Never, ever for a moment think that you are not appreciated. To this day, whenever I see young men and women in uniform I walk up to them and say, “Thank you for being there!” No matter what folks say about Walter Reed, they took great care of me when I got whacked in the head with a TBI–and they will take care of you! So sorry you had to go through this, but now that I have found your name at the bottom of this blog thing, my family, (including son who is a Catholic priest), friends, and church will pray for you by name! I wish you a strong and speedy recovery–your wife and that cute little guy need you! Thanks again,

  • Laura:

    Hello Jon,

Laura here from Romania.I apreciate alot what your father-in-law do through the internet making peoples from around the world to think just for a moment in their lives to those who are far from their homes and families fighting for one reason or another.I dont like wars and I dont like violence but this is life and we have to move on and face it.
I dont know what feels a wife with her husband gone fighting there or a parent who knows that their kid is there and the danger is everywhere around in any minute of his life, but I know what a good friend feels knowing all this.
Yes,as you can see I know in one way what you feel,I had a good old friend who was fighting in Irak.He is young and I know him for 13 years and he is older than me just with one year; he have only 28 years old and I thank God that now is back home safe and healthy and he enjoy everyday beside of his 3 years old daughter, but also he lost a few friends while they were their.I know how is to feal fear in your heart and to pray for them to come back home in one peace and this is my wish for you too,to find out in one day that you are back home safe and healthy and you enjoy everyday beside the ones that you love.
I dont know how much will help you all this what I write you here but a few years ago I wrote it a few lines that makes me to feel much better everytime I read it when I feel myself down.I call it my little univers and I only share it whit those one that I love, but now I believe that I have to share my little univers with you and all your friends who geting through all this hard moments in your lifes hoping that will lift you up gaving you confindence in yourselfs, will lift you up when you feel down and will shine your day when you will read it:
    “I wish you:
to “stamble” by a rock named LUCK,
to “fall” in a lake named HAPPINESS,
to walk in a forest named SUCCES,
to dance on a plain named CHANCE,
to feel the perfume of a flower named PURITY,
to be surrounded by a fragrance named LOVE,
to gather fruits from a tree named HEALTH,
over you to float a clear sky from where are falling down tiny stars named SUCCEEDS,
to walk on a bridge named PEACE
and to support yourself by a railing named SILENCE,
over your life to shine one gold sun named SMILES
and to breathe the cleanest air named FREEDOM.”

This is my little univers and you and all those who are far from home and family make part of it now hoping that you and all others will read it in one day and will bring hopes in your hearts and smiles on your lips and faces.
Be strong for your son,he needs you more than anyone and I’m sure that you and your friends will get home well back to your families by the grace of the Lord.
May God bless you all and bring you home safe and healthy as He bringed my friend back to his daughter.

    Love,
    Laura

  • Dorothy Pozehl:

    Dear Jon,

It seems that everyone has already sent you every psychological aspect that has ever been proclaimed so I’ll leave that part to the experts. My family has had immediate
family members in every war we’ve been in, including the
Revolution, so of course our hearts are always with the service people. In the final analyses it isn’t the politicians or newsmen who win the wars, it is the Boots On The Ground troops . A family member who is a physician, is
presently in the war area, assigned to the Seals. I am adding your name (just Jon)to an Interfaith prayer group that was started by employees of a large hospital here in Florida.

May God bless you, your young family, as well as your extended family. Thank you for your service.

    Dorothy

  • To all of the fine people who leave their families for duty and to their families, my thoughts are with you.
Get well soon and may your family continue to find the strength each day to energise you with their love.

  • Kimberley Robinson:

    Hi Jon,

Thank you, and your friends for all you do. Here’s a
little something for your special spirit.

My spirit had been hanging around, bothering me forever.

I had done everything I could to get rid of her but she

just wouldn’t leave. So, one morning I heard her singing

in the shower, as always. I was trying to sleep, so I

snatched the covers up over my head. Then my spirit

came prancing through the room dripping wet, jumped

on the bed, and started dancing. “You are really starting

to piss me off”, I said, cringing as I lifted my head from

under the warm blankets. But she ignored me, like

always. She trotted off the bed singing, like she was the

luckiest spirit in the world, she danced over to the

window and without hesitation, flung the curtains wide

open. The sun streamed in, and filled the room with a

radiant bright light. “That’s it”, I screamed, “I’ve had

enough of you”. I Leaped out of the bed, and upon

racing over to her, stubbed my toe. That made me even

more furious, no more, I thought. I’m getting rid of you

once and for all. I reached for her, grabbed her by the

neck, slapped her around a bit, and without hesitation, I

ate her. I brushed my hands together in triumph, and let

out a big burp. I hobbled to the bathroom, having no

regrets for what I had just done. I was late as usual, and

didn’t care about that either. I got in the shower and

turned on the water. The water was cool, that damn

spirit used all the hot water I murmured. I stood under

the heavy spray, about to go through my ritual of

thoughts about how crappy my day was going to be, and

how much my life sucked, when all of a sudden I got the

urge to sing. Where did that come from I thought. I got

dressed rush out like always, saw my neighbors standing

in the same annoying places they’re always standing in,

and greeted each one of them with, “It’s a beautiful day

isn’t it?” They looked at me with surprise and greeted me

back. What the heck, I’ve never said that before. I don’t

even talk to them. All day I felt funny, smiling at

everyone, which seem to make them happy, because they

kept smiling back. I sat in the sun and ate my lunch,

enjoying the rays on my skin. That really got me thinking.

Me having a moment? That’s new. I tried to figure out

what the heck was wrong with me, why I was acting so

strange. Then I remembered I had eaten my spirit that

morning. And then, I laughed, first time I had done that

in a long time. I realized, it was a trick. It’s

what my spirit had wanted all along, to

    get back inside. of me.

    Moral of the story:
Never eat your spirit on an empty stomach, it will give you laughing gas.

2nd Moral to the story. Spirits rock.

    With well wishes,
    Kimberley

    Dear Jon,
Thank You to you and all the troops now and in the past who have fought and served our country. Our prayers go out to you and all those who served with you and their families.

  • Donald Younglove:

Jon, we are praying for you.

Prayer did wonders for me when I was 26. Had a spinal tumor that pressed from outside the spine. Had no feeling or muscel control from just below arms to toes. Was told it would take me 3 months to learn to walk like a baby and another 6 months before I could walk normally. Thanks to all those who prayed for me I walked down 3 flights of stairs, and two more short stairs with my dad to our car two weeks after surgery.

Much prayer also helped me in 1999 when i underwent total knee replacement of both knees (0ne at a time) and neck and spinal surgery. Plus twice had atrial fluuter corrected.
First time, after 3 hours and about 100 shocks to scar the tissue my wife was told I wouls have to take medicine or wear pace maker. When being discharhed my heart was back to normal.

Jon, trust God, your doctors and the staff. Think postive and remember all the resons you want to keep on living. Your wife, family, friends.

    Your frinds in prayer;
    Don & Rowena Younglove

  • Hi Jon,
Greetings from Colorful Colorado especially right now with the beautiful fall colors around us. We are saddened to hear about your injuries and the loss of your friend. You are in good hands at Walter Reed Hospital and we pray for you and your comrades a very speedy recovery. One of our friends, a 19 yr old hometown boy, Kade, a young Marine, was also injured by a roadside bomb 2 yrs ago and spent a long recovery at Walter Reed. He lost his leg and part of his skull and now has a plate in place. He is home and was the Marine who threw out the first pitch at the Rockies home game during the World Series last week. When you are up to it and if you would like to correspond with him I can send you his email address. To meet him you would never know he had been injured. Such a nice young man….he made quite a few trips back and forth to Walter Reed for physical therapy.

I can not begin to imagine what you and your unit have gone through on a day to day basis overseas. Words cannot tell you how much we appreciate each one of you. One of my good friends son is due home in a few weeks from Iraq and we pray for his safe return. I can tell you have a very caring and loving family and what a handsome son you have waiting for you at home.

God Bless you and all your family.

  • Tracey Morgan:

here’s wishing for a fast and speedy recovery. my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  • John Q Shaw:

    Jon

Your Father-in-Law is a Gentleman – so when he told me of your situation, I chose to respond, immediately….just like so many other of his true friends.

Know that your personal service and the many sacrifices you and your Comrades-in-Arms have made for your wonderful Country and fellow man are highly valued and hugely appreciated by myself and all members of my immediate family – we all wish you a complete and speedy recovery. We also want you to know that you are very much in our thoughts as you adjust to the way your Life will now be and that you will come to realise that what has happened to you can only affect you to the extent that you ALLOW it to. How you decide to handle and respond to this situation DOES depend on how you CHOOSE to behave from here on. I had a terrible car smash when I was 21 (in Africa, in 1969) and suffered horrendous third degree burns, major head and brain injuries, destroyed knee joints and various other injuries too numerous to mention….and I was told I would never walk again and to “accept my fate/etc”…Fortunately, I CHOSE not to believe that and instead I CHOSE to see (and BELIEVE) myself fully healed and leading a normal life and with all my mental capabilities restored/uanaffected and NEVER TO DOUBT the excellent medical treatment I received at all times.
When discharged several months later, I was walking normally and had recovered so fully it was regarded as a “miracle”. After one year, I was “as good as new” again…
I am now nearly 60 and still in good health, but the point of telling you this is because – with the benefit of hindsight and the Wisdom that comes with age/having learnt from many wise Teachers – I know now that this seeming “disaster” saved my life from being killed in action for my Country when we were at war (in Rhodesia 1965 – 1980) – as well as multiple other benefits I could never have foreseen in the dark days of pain and agonising recuperation/skin grafts and the like on my hospital bed…The Universe never makes mistakes and you need to know that it will be “handling the details” of your recovery and rehabilitation better than any mortal man ever could – provided only that you allow it do so/chose to believe in Miracles. What happened to you may well prove to ultimately hide a great blessing – be open to that possibility – and let the love of your family, friends, fellow soldiers and well wishers like myself replenish your Soul and revive you spirits whenever they flag…
I suggest you get yourself a copy of A COURSE OF MIRACLES (http://www.acim.org/)and work through the course to the end….it will transform your life and enable you to access Divine Power when you need it most.
Dr David R Hawkins books (Power vs Force, Truth vs Falsehood) are also two of the most profound books I have ever read and that I can wholeheartedly recommend to you for the situation you are in…see details on “Veritas Publishing” Website (http://www.veritaspub.com/index.php) for all 6 of his books/DVDS/VIDEOS/etc, or visit “The Last Outpost” website (http://www.thelastoutpost.com/site/1290/default.aspx) and check out “David Hawkins”.)

    Best Regards,
with love and huge respect for all you and your soldier mates have done/continue to do in the service of your Country/Mankind generally.

My heart goes out to you and your friends. There are a lot of people praying for your recovery right now – physical and emotional. You have family and friends who will be standing beside you to help anyway they can. And, you have God to turn to when it gets too rough to handle.

God bless and grant you and your friends a complete recovery.

  • For Jon,

Words cannot express our gratitude to you and your friends who put it all on the line for us, for our children and grandchildren. Thank you, Jon. Your bravery and suffering do not go unappreciated or forgotten.

When you are feeling down, look UP. Miracles do happen … even though sometimes it’s a process (another of those “p” words that’s so hard, like “patience”). I know. They said I would never walk again. It was a medical impossibility, requiring a creative miracle in the bones in my leg if I did not accept a cadaver bone and risk of life-long infection. But ALL things are possible with God…And now after 5 years, I have almost full range of motion (the rest is coming!) and can do some dancing and jogging… not to mention that I could already 2 miles with ease after only ONE year.

So as you thank God for saving your life (He has plans for you!), thank Him for your healing and for being made whole. (”Speak of those things that be not as though they were.”) Find a couple of healing scriptures that really hit home, and pray them periodically throughout the day. Get them down in your heart and in your spirit, so you don’t doubt your full restoration. And fear not. (Fear is the opposite of faith.)

I know firsthand from MORE than the one miracle I mentioned. I know that I know that I know… So take hold of this fact: Faith is a powerful force, and it’s the effective, fervent prayer – believing that you receive! – that brings the miracle. He wants it for you. He already paid for it when He said: “It is done!” Now it’s up to you to claim it.

Do so, and you’ll be running and playing with your son! God love you, and so do we!

    Marg

Oh, and if you want help finding verses that just feel like they were written for you, don’t hesitate to ask. Your father-in-law has my email through this post. I have also been a caregiver for several years for a loved one at home (a far cry from the corporate executive world I knew, and something for which I was ill-prepared), and so has my partner. So we have been pulling together resources to help those such as we – and such as your wife when you first get home – to get the help and support you need. We will help in any way we can. You and your family are NOT alone!

  • To a brave and wonderful hero, all the best and blessings. My heart goes out to you and I am sending many positive vibes your way for your speedy recovery. Hope to see you play with your baby and be able to RUN with him. May Spirit be with you on this hard journey.

    Jon,

Our prayers and speedy healing are with you and your family.

  • Hi Jon,

My thoughts are with you and your friends even though I don’t know you. Do not ever forget that you and our boys from the UK are professionals. You have and are making a difference in the world and through you true professionalism and the pride you have for your country and each other you are helping others to think that maybe, just maybe a better world will evolve.

May your god go with you,

    Chris

  • Les and Mary Schnierer:

    Dear Jim,

My young nephew, Dave – who just lost his Dad to cancer- has been
    assigned to Iraq.
Like so many others, he leaves behind three young sons, all under
    15, and a wife, Carey,
who is often not well. No Faith untested is worthy of the name. I
feel that our faith is being
sorely tested, and, that we will find the will and the courage to
    strengthen that very faith -
in God and in His Children, who are our brothers and sisters.

I’m sorry not to be well-versed in blogging (soon I’ll have time and
    strength to learn) to have
left your son-in-law a brief message. Just tell him that another of
    your corresponders/readers has sent him
and his Loved Ones a prayer and prayerful thoughts and Best Wishes.
    Amen.

  • Hi Jon,

Most people who have not been involved in a war of their own making have no real perception of what it can do to you and your family. I know from personal experience in Northern Ireland, the daily bombing and shootings get to you eventually – but the thing is – it can make you a better person – it can make you a force for good – and when you’ve seen the wrost side of people, things can only get better!

I hope you make a full recovery as fast as possible, you’ve obviously got a good family infrastructure which gives you a really strong starting point.

Take care – and enjoy your life.

Thank you for all you’ve done. 3rd John 2, may you prosper in all things..

  • Hi Jon,

As you can see, you are in the hearts and prayers of a lot of people and you are now also in mine. My boyfriend, the love of my life, is also serving in the region and his life and safety is always on my mind.
I hope that this outpouring of love and support, for you, your comrads and their families gives you all some strength and endurance during your time of recovery and in your adaptation to a new life.
    All the best,

    Miriam

  • Roy Rummel:

    To Jim Edward’s Son-in-Law,

So sorry your life has this major intrusion and trauma. I pray and see your life being healed with great energy and awareness of blessings, and that your life will be enriched with each passing day. knowing that even these horrible things some work together for our eventual good.

  • Jon I wanted to send this article to you to show you how Kade is doing now. (I mentioned Kade in an earlier post). This was written about 6 months ago. Kade is now back home in Colorado. We know Jon your recovery may take time but you have a lot to look forward to and you will be back home with your wife and son sooner than you think. You can do what Kade has done!

God Bless you and your family. Joyce and Jake.

    Kade Hinkhouse — Fully Committed

On June 7, 2008, Kade Hinkhouse plans to walk down the aisle with his new wife. While that is certainly a
momentous occasion for anyone, for this 21-year-old Marine Corps veteran the day will be even more meaningful.
Leaving his parents and girlfriend back in Colorado in August 2005, Hinkhouse, who had just graduated
high school, was “finally doing something worthwhile” when he joined the Marines. He was deployed to Iraq a
month later to help fight the War on Terror. In October of that year, Hinkhouse returned to the United States –
much sooner than he or anyone else expected.
Growing up, Hinkhouse always wanted to be in the military. After joining the Marines, he was “happy
and excited” to serve his country in Iraq. Only a month after his arrival though, his Humvee crossed over a path of
improvised explosive devices. He feels lucky to have survived the blast. “I pretty much got it the worst,” he said.
“Except for the guy about six inches away from me, because he died. So, in a way I really lucked out.”
The Colorado native sustained traumatic brain injuries and part of his skull was removed at the Army’s
Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. In addition to the head injury, Hinkhouse’s right leg was
amputated above the knee. “I woke up feeling a bit groggy,” he said about his three-week drug-induced coma. “A
few minutes later, I found out my leg was gone.”
Despite the severity of his injuries, Hinkhouse has managed to maintain his sense of humor. “I can get half-off
on pedicures and I have more socks,” he said jokingly. “Think about it…I don’t need a pair. So, I have 24 days
worth of socks, and you only have 12. You can either give up, or deal.” It is this self-proclaimed jock’s optimistic
attitude, plus months of physical and occupational therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington,
D.C., that help make his present and upcoming achievements possible.
The newly-engaged veteran currently lives at Walter Reed’s Mologne House. He enjoys getting out as much
as possible and is taking full advantage of his surroundings. Visiting museums currently tops his list of things to do.
He is steadfast on his path to gain more physical and mental strength. Despite long hours of strenuous therapy,
he’s also exploring new career options, specifically teaching, and plans to start college when he moves back home.
The walk down the aisle will certainly mark an enormous lifetime commitment for Kade Hinkhouse, something
he is quite familiar with since his perseverance and dedication are challenged daily. In April 2007, he will put his hard work to the test on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains at the 2007 National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. He may not be the best skier there, since this will only be his “third or fourth visit” to the slopes, but with his proven track record for devotion and passion, it is unlikely to be his last.

  • Firoz B. Master:

    Hi Jon, Oct. 30, 2007

I heard today from your father-in-law of your injury. It reminds me of the poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade” (read it), but duty always comes first. Have faith that you will get absolutely well and stronger than before, both physically and mentaly. I wish you health and happiness.

    With regards,

    Firoz B. Master.

  • Paul Easton:

    Hi Jon,
A short message from new zealand- the bottom of the world. best wishes and get well soon- Well done of supporting your country

    Paul

  • Hey PFC Jon H,
    UK to USA calling.
Look Jon, you didn’t have to get yourself hospitalised just to avoid seeing your Father-In-Law, I heard Jim ain’t that bad!(but that was from a third party who’d heard it so from a friend of a friend who’s prison record said he was unreliable!;-)
The World,(let alone the West) and all those with civilised values, owes all you guys a massive vote of “THANKS”. You didn’t ask to be placed directly in the line of fire but you did your duty and have paid a high price, both in terms of your injuries and loss of good mates. You and all the guys out there in theatres of war (on our behalf)deserve of the best.
I understand you ‘might’ have some ongoing healing problems with your right leg so,as soon as possible, learn to hover and then kick military ass hard with your left,in order to get the best aftercare, rest & recreation.
I and all right thinking people wish you speedy wellness.
    Good Luck

    Jon

I’m sure you and your companions will recover soon.
    Good luck.

  • Jon H. (and Jim),

Well wishes to you and to all serving our Country. I am a fan-at-a-distance of Jim and his online projects, but I also work with a project you may both be interested in.

It is called Wreaths Across America (wreathsacrossamerica.org) and it is a non-profit organization dedicated to placing wreaths at veterans cemeteries all across the country. The project started over 15 years ago with a 5000 wreaths donated to Arlington.

I’m happy for you and your family that you are not one of these young men or women that we honor each year with a wreath for the holidays, but the organization also carries the message that we need to always appreciate the service men and women in harm’s way, protecting our freedoms that we enjoy every day.

Again, best wishes to you and your team for a recovery, and for your loss. Blessing to the families thru this difficult time.

  • John Williams:

    Dear Jon,
What you must be feeling right now I can only imagine and poorly at that. My father served for a year in VietNam and was there during the TET Offensive. My family was one of the lucky ones-He came back alive. Your family is also lucky to have you home. I’m sure the biggest pain for you is the loss of your comrades. It is a pain that unfortunately, will never go away.

Words can not express my deepest sadness for your loss and pray for a speedy recovery from your wounds. My father is my hero, just as I know you are a hero to your children. Only a family who has known service truly knows the sacrifices you made. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

    You are not forgotten.

    John

  • Lynn:

Jon – thank you for your service in preserving our freedom!! My husband served with the Navy Seabees for more than 20 years and I want to say “thank you” to your wife for her support as well! I hope you will be doing well soon!

  • Get Well Soon! Ours prayers are with you everyday. We say our thanks and prayers to our troops every night when we sit down to diner. My family is grateful for you do to help our FREEDOM that we have. Bless You on a speedy recovery

  • Paul:

Jon, I don’t normally contribute to blogs but this one is different. I fly our (UK) injured personnel out of Iraq and Afghanistan and everytime I see one of you guys, I’m amazed that you are all still smiling! The resilience and fortitude which I have witnessed is humbling. It puts the world into perspective. I’m proud to have the opportunity to help out and I hope that this is one more little thing which accomplishes that. I wish you a speedy and full recovery and am grateful for what you and your colleagues do. Thank you.

My Life is but a Weaving

My life is but a weaving
    between my Lord and me;
    I cannot choose the colors,
    He worketh steadily.
    Oft times He weaveth sorrow,
    And I, in foolish pride,
    Forget He sees the upper,
    And I the under side.

Not ’til the loom is silent
and the shuttles cease to fly,
    Shall God unroll the canvas
    and explain the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful
    in the Weaver’s skillful hand,
As the threads of gold and silver
in the pattern He has planned.
He knows, He loves, He cares,
    nothing this truth can dim.
He gives His very best to those
who leave the choice with Him.

  • Hi Fella,

As an old Viet vet bearing scars myself, I want to tell you that yes, life does go on even if we don’t think it will. You will get better and you will heal, both outside and in. Now is the time to ease your mind, put everything aside except for the things you have to do to get better. Remember you’re not alone. You have the strength of your family to lean on when it gets tough and your personal God in whatever form that takes when family is not quite enough. Stay strong and we’ll stay with you….all of us.
