A few days ago we received word that my son-in-law was gravely injured when the vehicle he drove in Iraq was hit by a roadside bomb.

He faces a long recovery and may never fully regain the use of his right foot, yet he was one of the lucky ones in this incident.

One of his friends and team members was killed and another was grievously injured and fighting for his life in a hospital bed in Germany right now.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget the fact that so many men and
women serve to protect us and our freedom every day until
something like this happens to you.

Whether you agree with the current political climate or the
reasons we fight or not, it’s important to never lose sight
of the fact that our soldiers are in peril serving us.

Unless you have a son or daughter or husband or wife
serving, it may never cross you mind to really think about
the tremendous sacrifices every armed forces member makes
daily so we can remain safe and free.

However, what you may not realize (or even think about) is
that these young men and women are not robots – they’re
people.

They get scared and lonely and homesick just like you would
if you got separated from friends and family over thousands
of miles for months, sometimes years at a time.

But there is something we can all do to make their lives
brighter and bring comfort to them and their families no
matter how far away their duty station – and the Internet
helps us do it!

The USO (United Services Organization) has been helping to
support the troops ever since Bob Hope toured Europe to
entertain during World War II.

The USO continues its mission today by offering help,
support, and comfort to our troops both at home and abroad.

But the USO needs help constantly with both cash donation
and volunteer help to keep serving our troops.

If you can’t volunteer your time then they would certainly
appreciate a donation through their website.

You can even make your donation in memory of someone or in
honor of someone special to you.

This site provides a way to connect with troop support
organizations in your state.

Here in Virginia there are 40 different sites listed with
more information on how you can make a difference in the
lives of our troops and their families.

This site makes it possible for you to find a specific way
you can contribute.

With the holidays coming up, it’s even more important to
get involved with the effort to support our troops with
more than just a ribbon on a tree or a magnet on a car.

The best gift anyone can give is the gift of time, energy
and effort to make someone else’s life a little brighter.

Even if you just send a card, make a donation, or put
together a gift box, that simple act may lift the spirits
of someone who could really use a hug across thousands of
miles or right around the corner.

If you don’t do it, then who will?

Get well soon!!! We in the UK appreciate all that the US and UK armed forces are doing to make the world a safer place

  • Hey Jon,

Want to thank you for all that you have done and sacrifices you have made. Hope you recover soon and god bless you guys. Makes what I do seem trivial in comparison.

  • Laura:

    Dear Jon,

Thank you for your service. My prayers and thoughts are with you for a speedy recovery.

    Sincerely,
    Laura

  • Jon,

I’m so sorry to hear of your injury. We tend to get involved in our day to day lives, and forget what you are all doing for us over in Iraq. Praise God, that He protected you.

Thank you for your service and faithfulness to support our country. You’ll be in my prayers.

  • to PFC Jon H – I can only express my deepest condolences. I have a brother seriously injured in Nam and a son, recently retired from the Army, who was there for Desert Storm.

I send you healing thoughts and prayers. I’m sure you’re struggling not only with your own injuries, but with concern for your comrades and the one you lost.

Please know that, no matter our attitudes about this war, the SOLDIERS ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN. I experienced the ‘bad attitudes’ during Nam. I NEVER want to have another soldier come home to that. But I also experienced the joy of meeting my son on his return from D.S. … he didn’t understand the fuss. But I did.

I, and my family and friends, send you greetings, get well wishes, and hopes for a healing of the body, mind and spirit in the coming long weeks of recovery. Keep your family close to you. And know that you have a ‘little guy’ anxious for your hugs and guidance.

Wishing you (and all of our soldiers) continued strength and healing.

    Hugs from Maryland, Ellie

PS Jim – the same goes for you and your family – I send you strength and healing thoughts as you support others. E

  • Jon,

Thank your for protecting us and guarding our way of life. Without people like you, America would not be what it is today. My families prayers are with you to make a speedy recovery.

You are what America stands for.

  • Marvin:

Hello Jon, my family and I are deeply grateful for the sacrifice you and your military family have made in the name of Freedom and Democracy. Never, for a moment think that you are not appreciated. To this day, whenever possible, when I see young men and women in uniform I walk up to them and say, “thank you.” I wish you a strong and speedy recovery. Thanks again.

  • Dear Jon,
I only know your father-in-law through the internet as a fellow internet marketer, but wanted you to know that even though we’ve never met, me and my entire team at Prime Concepts wish you a speedy recovery, you’re in our thoughts and prayers and we appreciate you and your buddies immensely. Thank you for your sacrifices and god bless you!

  • Binoy Gupta:

It is a real shame that even today countries maintain military forces incurring massive expenses and often involving casualties.
We should all strive to have a world without any military forces.
I wish you a very quick recovery.

  • Jim,

I am deeply saddened to hear about your son-in-laws injuries.

When you and I spoke in Las Vegas about him going over there I actually said a prayer for him in my hotel room that night.

Please let him know that he will continue to remain in my (and my families) prayers.

As a service veteran myself, I’m so grateful for his service to his country.

But I’m so sorry that he has had to make such a painful sacrifice.

I wish him a speedy recovery, both physically and mentally from his wounds.

If there is anything I can do to help him or his family you can call me day or night.

  • Don Bethune:

Jim will be bringing with him healing energy from many other people who see you whole and well, and mine will be there too. I trust you will find peace as well as physical healing.

    Jon,
My wife Cathi and I have never met you although we know your family through Jim. We heard of your incident and wanted to send our love and prayers.

Thanks can hardly be enough to a young man who represents our country, our way of life and our families here at home, but we certainly do thank you for your selfless service and commitment to do your best.

God’s love and blessings to you and your family,

    Jon,

You are a great American and our prayers are with you and your family. I would like to share this thought with you:

WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE.

May God now demonstrate His faithfullness to you as you have faithfully served our country and ensured my family’s freedom. Seek Him with all your heart and He will not only guide you, but “will never leave you, nor forsake you.”

    In our Thoughts and Prayers,

    Hi Jon,

Thanks for the job you and other brave men and women do in protecting our great country overseas so we don’t have to do it here. Our prayers are for the speedy recovery of you and your team members, and years of happiness with your family here in the good ole USA.

  • Hey Jon,

    Welcome home Soldier…….and thanks.

Yesterday we saw a bumper sticker that said, “If you can read this………thank a Teacher.”

Since you are reading it in English……..thank a Soldier.”

Gayle and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Lots of love from South Carolina.

    Fred and Gayle.

  • Jim
As you know, we discussed these things the last time I saw you. My son Steve was wounded for the second time last week and is deaf in his right ear with brain damage from an armor piercing round that went through his truck filling him with shrapnel. This is his second Purple Heart so as far as any statement on the war–there’s mine. He made it through but some of the guys under his command did not walk away.
Your son-in-law and the men with him are doing what most people CAN’T do–they are putting the most valuable thing they have on the line for our country–their lives. I pray for your son-in-law and for the guys, his buddies there with him that have paid this heavy cost for all of us so we can go to work, school, church and any other place we desire free from fear of these individuals that want to take our freedoms. They know the meaning of sacrifice and hardship–they have seen the true face of terror and did their part to stop it. God bless him and his whole troop and tell him thanks from a Dad who understands what he did for all of us here!

  • David Leffler:

    Jon,

Thank you for the ultimate service you provide to our country. You are a hero and role model for a nation. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten!

    God’s speed and get well.

    Dave Leffler

PS Thanks for the heads up Jim.

  • Hi Jon:

My wife and I are so verry sorry to hear of your injury. Our wish for you is to get well quickly. We thank you very much for the wonderful job all of the troops are doing to bring peace abroad and to keeping peace in the great United States of America. Once again God Bless you and get well real soon.

  • Jon,

    Hi Jon,

As a former serviceman myself, I can’t be any prouder of the young generation of military men and women like yourself. Your sacrifice shows a big heart for your country and I pray that your country shows a big heart in return. Your next, and more important mission, is to raise a strong family and to do that, you must recover. I have no doubts that you have the right people in your corner, including your father-in-law, and that you’ll continue to make America proud. Best wishes for the fight that faces you and a proud salute to a professional soldier.

  • Dear Jim: I’ve been a practioner of Buddhism for 35 years and in that tradition there is a practice called Tonglin where as one is meditating, one focuses on sending out all that is of benefit to those who are suffering and actually taking in that suffering upon oneself. I will, with your permission, post a message with Jon’s name, location, and a brief description of injuries suffered to the Buddhist community to which I belong for meditators to include Jon in their Tomglin practice. P.S. I feel you need to give me permission to do this..

  • D Scott:

    Jon,

Thank you for your willingness to make the sacrifice of leaving your family and the comfort of home behind, and the ultimate sacrifice if necessary, to make a difference in the lives of others. I wish you a complete and speedy recovery. Stay cheerful and remember, with faith and hope all things are possible.

  • Vincent Moore:

    Jon,

You and your fellow soldiers do a very honorable service to our country and the freedom our country represents. Without the dedication and love of your country that all the members of the military have, this country would not enjoy the freedoms that we have today. The same can be said for other countries where we have intervened in the name of helping them obtain or maintain their freedom.

The job of the US Military is, unfortunately, thankless at times. Even so, many of the members of the military make the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.

I, my family, and my co-workers all want to say that we truly appreciate what you have done in the service of our great nation. We also appreciate every single member of our armed forces. You guys, and girls, fight the good fight and protect our way of life.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything. You’ll be in my prayers as will every other member of our military in harm’s way.

    Best wishes on your recovery!

    Vincent Moore

  • Greg Beverly:

    You are in our prayers,
    Greg Beverly

  • Dear Jon,

First and foremost THANK-YOU for the sacrafices you and your fellow soldiers make for us here in America every single day.

You will be in my prayers for a speedy recovery. (as will your family, your team members and their families) I think about and pray for all of you often. YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!!!!

I too only know your Father through the internet and his newsletters. I think what he is doing for you and the others is wonderful. All of you need to know you are in hearts.

Please let your Father know what the soldiers would most like to receive, be it items and/or letters, so he can put it in his newsletter. Also let him know the best place to send them.

I would especially like to send letters and put together what I can in a gift/care package.

God Bless you and your family.

    Paula

  • Jon,

How blessed we are to live in a country where men and women are willing to face the ultimate test and risk their life for a freedom we sometimes take for granted. I am sorry that we, as Americans, have a loss of life trying to help other people of other nations, but I know that God gave us such a great country because we (you) are willing to fight for the rights and priviledges we have as United States citizens. We cannot say it often enough, but THANK YOU and may God richly bless you and your family and may your recovery time be swift.

  • Doug:

Thanks for your service to our great country. It is men like you that keep the USA free. Your time spent there is worthwhile.

  • Jon

So sorry to hear your news. I truly admire the fact that you and your comrades were prepared to risk all to improve the world as a whole.

  • Stephanie:

Hi Jon- take a deep breath- you did your job. Now it’s time for you to rest your mind and your body. Spend time with your wife and your family. I’ve been lucky enough to live the American Dream- I am a woman, I own my own business, my own house, and I do whatever it is that I want to do. It’s now your turn to live your dream. What do you want to do with your life? Don’t ever allow someone else to dictate your actions- if war doesn’t make you understand that, nothing else will. Your obligation to the government is now over- you owe it to yourself to give yourself and your community the other skills and talents that you possess. And now’s the time to do it!I wish you the best in life and hope that you fulfill your dreams.

  • Rich Hemstreet:

My wife and I send you best wishes for a speedy and full recovery and condolences to the family of your team member who gave his last full measure of devotion.

  • Jon, there is no way I can express to you the gratitude I feel for your commitment to our country. While I personally do not support the war, I totally support the unwavering loyalty our military shows day after day. If there is such a thing as luck in this type of incident, you are indeed lucky. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

As you progress through your rehabilitation and get ready to come home, please have your father in law get in touch with me so I can send you a copy of my new video entitled ‘Caring For A Loved One At Home’ which is dedicated to caregivers of family members.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

  • Hi Jon,

I think everyone wishes you and your fellow crew all the best.

Our thoughts are with not only you but with all military forces fighting in Iraq.

As a Viet Nam vet I want to sincerely thank you for your service and your sacrifice. There are millions of Americans who support you as a soldier and a defender of our freedoms. Most of us don’t say much but we are forever grateful and will never forget you. We love you Jon.

  • Hi, Jon – here I am wishing you well.

The casualties of war are never far from our minds. Our mother was a nurse during WWII and served in Egypt and Italy. She often related stories about caring for wounded service men and women from “all” sides of the conflict and, as a nurse, she was dedicated to helping the wounded to recover. The wartime arguments were left behind at the hospital door and patients’ injuries were treated with care and discipline. I know you will be in the care of similar loving and dedicated medical teams who will bring strength and comfort to you to help you get better; they will also be supporting your family and friends and that’s just as it should be.

    Best wishes for your recovery.
    Margaret

  • David Derby:

But above all, no matter what, believe in yourself and believe you will get through it.

    David Derby

  • Jon
A quote from a book that has ment a lot to me, and I hope it helps in your time of healing.
Jon, “you have the freedom to be yourself, your true self, here and now, and nothing can stand in your way. It is the Law of God, tne Law that Is.

  • Jon,

Sending you healing energy and strength to fight this next battle. You are up to this challenge!

I offer today’s message from The Universe (www.universe@tut.com), trusting that it will be what you need to understand at the time it reaches you:

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

Long, long ago, before there was even sand in the hourglass, there was a teeny, tiny dot, Jon — so small it was virtually invisible — that was presented to you as a gift.

At first, puzzled and perplexed, you thought it was a joke. Yet, trusting and inquisitive, your intuition led you to accept it and, before long, to carefully examine it.

And lo, after becoming extraordinarily teeny and tiny yourself, you found there was an entrance of sorts into this little treasure, in the form of a long and winding path. So inside you went, through the densest grove of ancient, moss-covered, bending oaks you will ever see. And before long, you found a shiny, gold, old-fashioned key that had been left upon a large, rounded stone, as if especially for you.

With key in hand you proceeded down the path until you arrived at a massive gate. Just above it there was a handwritten plaque for all who might pass beneath it:

“Welcome to the Jungles of Time and Space, Where nothing is as it seems, yet all things are possible. Should you ever feel lost or weary, Forget not from where you have come, And follow the signs…”

Peering between the wrought iron bars, you could see the entire Milky Way Galaxy and a hundred billion galaxies beyond it. Your thoughts raced, your imagination ran wild, and as you raised your key to the sturdy, reinforced lock, slowly slipping it in, and gently turning… there was a sudden flash of light and burst of sound. Whereupon, seemingly light-years later but, in fact, no longer than an instant, you found yourself in the most beautiful human form, living on the most beautiful little planet, having a wonderful life, a wrinkle of curiosity on your brow, reading this very Note, right here and now, as Jon H.

  • Yes, you have our prayers, not for just a speedy recovery, but for a COMPLETE AND PERFECT recovery for you and your family and loved ones. You are not alone in this; we each and all are touched, by your courage, your strength, your willingness and the same for your family.

I have a 17 year old son who is insulin dependent diabetic and he cannot serve our country due to this condition. When I look at him I think of what it is to have a son, husband, brother, sister, mother, daugher, friend, away and serving in the Armed Forces and what comes up for me is how brave and bold and compassionate you all are. To serve on behalf of others is a calling.

Please accept our well wishes and know that we hold you and your family in our thankful grateful prayers each day and again we send you the energy and the will for a whole complete and perfect recovery.

Our best, to you, the best

As a disabled veteran who works closely with the military, I have been amazed to see the quality of the men and women who wear the uniform today in support of our freedom! Remember, heroes know there is no greater gift than to be willing to lay down your life for another.

And I have them say thank you to every member of the armed services they meet along the way – so that they too know who protects us.

I am sorry for your loss and if there’s any at all my family can do to help out – just let us know.

  • Hello Jim, Jon and Family,
Hats off to you and hearts out to you and your team. I am a Canadian who has always loved the States and has many dear friends below the 49th parallel and now, daughter, son-in-law and two dear American grandbabies. So why all that?
I know you serve your country well, and I appreciate you and all the US personnel overseas. Wherever I go in work and travelling, I speak to military folks. Why? because without what you do, most of the world would look different now, and certainly be a “less free” zone.
Jon, I’m so sorry for the loss of your buddy.

With love, and prayers for your and your team’s recovery, I bid you God speed and get well. You are precious and dear.
and THANKS for your great offering. “No greater love has a man or woman than that they would lay down their lives for another.”

  • Jon,

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss of a friend and health. I am praying for you! And for the others who came through the attack, as well as for the family of the young man who died. My husband and uncles fought in the Vietnam war (I never call it a conflict), so I know a little about loss and valor. Thanks for everything you have done to make our country safer. I also know something of how time heals old wounds. Hang in there! Through all the therapy and everything else . . . it will be worth it in the long run!

  • Jon —

Unfortunately we still live in a world where fighting men and women must do what they do to preserve our precious freedoms. And make no mistake, you and your colleagues are that wall of protection.

Freedom is not about democracy, its about something far more important: Liberty. As fighting men and women of the United States you help to preserve our rights to be different, hold different views, worship as we please (or not all), speak out against or wholeheartedly support one ideology or the other. Your bravery and muscle allows us freedom to choose how we work, play and live; all without fear of reprisals or oppression. This is rare in history and indeed all too rare in today’s world.

The value of being an American is not about being in the majority and fearing no harm.

    Quite the contrary.

It’s about being in the MINORITY and fearing no evil! This is Liberty! It’s the most precious and sacred thing we as Americans possess and you help to preserve and sustain it.

There are those external forces that seek to destroy this liberty and freedom. And we should all be fully aware that it is you and other soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen and coasties who put yourselves in harms way (sometimes with tragic consequences) to stop it. I for one am grateful to you and to them and to all who preceded you.

Jon, it is my hope that you and your colleague find comfort and solace in these words. My prayers are with you.

    s/ Daniel Hall

I would be much more amenable to help if you would stop sending me spam, I have tried dozens of times to get off of your list, no luck. Then I finally come here and get a popup trying to sell me something.

Shame on you for using our troops for your own ends. Shame.

  • I appreciate all you do and have done. You are an inspiration. Sending love.

When I speak to people about Iraq and Afganistan we have many different opinions about if we should be there or not and for how long. One opinion everyone shares is we support out troups and are proud of the job they are doing. We pray that all our troups will be able to come home safely and soon. God Bless you!

  • Jon,

Get well soon and Thank You.

  • Get well very soon… well done for what you are doing. Winston Chrurchill once said “If you are going through hell, keep going.” Keep going Jon!

  • Hi Jon:

First, thank you for serving and for risking your life for our freedom. As a veteran of the Vietnam era, I know what it can be to serve when all at home aren’t necessarily behind you. You are a true hero.

Second, we hope and pray for your speedy recovery. May God watch over you and miraculously heal you from your injuries.

    Thanks again.

  • Jon:
G-d speed on your road to recovery.

While we will probably never meet ….you should know that there are tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of millions of “free” people throughout the World that are deeply in your debt, and the debt of your brave fellow warriors serving our country throughout the world.

We owe an enormous debt to you and all the young people of our Nation; who like you have had the courage and the leadership to stand up and face the ultimate sacrifice for that which you believe in, and which you wished to protect your family from.

The courage and steel which you have so clearly demonstrated with your heroic actions; can only foretell a great and honorable future for you and your young family.

We hope that the knowledge that there are so many millions of people who consider you and your comrades “true hero’s” will provide some comfort during your convalescence.

We all wish you a wonderful, happy and healthy future.

    You deserve it.

    Terry J.

  • Steve:

  • Hi Jon,

First thank you for your service to our great country. I admire you and all the other troops so much.

Know that there are many people around the world praying for you.

My wife has a cousin who was killed in the Black Hawk Down incident and we have never taken for granted how dreadful war is.

So keep your spirits high and know there there are a lot of people pulling for you.

Heres hoping for a quick recovery.

  • Brendan Kenny:

Jon – My words can’t express the level of gratitude I have for what you’ve given to serve our country. My brother was in Camp Buca and Baghdad for 15 months and he’s told me in-depth about the situation there. What all you guys have done is truly heroic. I for one believe that in 10-15 years and beyond the region will be in a far better place as a result of your work.

  • Jon,

Our prayers are with you at this time of need. May you make a speedy recovery. We are thinking of you. Very brave, and the future is bright.

  • Dave C in NJ:

    Hey Big Jon H.
WE are all proud and thankful for the work you do that we can’t do ourselves.
Since there is no room in “Healing” for politics (heck there is hardly enought room for us in there with God, Source, Spirit & Love of family and friends)
Clear your heart and mind and get well.

    Dave C in NJ

  • Sending prayers for a quick and successful recovery for your son-in-law.
    God bless him.
    joy

  • You honor us far more than we can ever honor you. You and your fellow soldiers are doing what is asked of you by your country and, no matter what our personal feelings about this conflict, we can never repay your service and duty.

In a world of cluttered chatter that appears to focus on celebrity, empty riches, and the outlandish, it is sobering when duty, honor, service, and heroism are displayed.

I know what it feels like to be down, to feel low, but I also know you have millions of Americans who truly honor you. You have the love of your friends and family. You are not alone and please always remember that persistence, perseverance, and hope are your best medicine.

When you are down, reach out, and there will always be a hand ready to shake yours.

One final thought. No matter how hard it may seem, smile at least once ever hour. Soon it becomes a habit that not only makes you happier, but it will infect everyone around you.

    Thank you

  • Dave:

God bless you and get well soon.

  • Dear Jon,

I am so sorry you lost a companion, soldier, and probably even friend. And, I am very sorry for your own suffering and the suffering of your 3 fellow soldiers.

It must be terrifying for you now, to think that one of the 5 in this horrible incidence died. Along with this comes guilt. Guilt that it was him/her, guilt that no one could prevent it.

Don’t ever let either fear or guilt grab hold of you beyond your recuperation time.

You can come back, spring up, and become a stronger and yet more sensitive person from this.

Is there any good in this? I don’t think so! But, you can still make it work for the good of YOU.

All the very best to you and your family. They suffer along with you and share your fear and pain with you.

And, I already wish you a peaceful Chirstmas. Perhaps you will be one of the few who will truly come to know and understand this season in a way none of us do.

    Take Care,
    Ruth,

  • Pat:

  • Jason:

    Jon,

I don’t usually take the time to write on blogs, but I just got Jim’s email and wanted to let you know that the only people I admire are our soldiers.

It takes alot of courage to do what you do, and not a day passes that I don’t appreciate what you and our other soldiers do for me and my loved ones.

Thank you and get well soon.

  • Roger:

    Dear Jon,

  • robert:

    Jon-

During a particularly tough stretch, I kept repeating to myself, “All news is good news… all news is good news.” For awhile, it was the sarcastic side of me that would find the “positive” aspects of my situation. Slowly, very slowly, I began to see a few bright spots, and eventually my attitude turned around.

I want you to know that many of the worst things that have happened to me in the past, I was later grateful for. The reason why is because they often led to something so much better. I think that’s true for most of us, if we’re honest.

I believe that the sooner you start recognizing and acknowledging what’s RIGHT about your situation, the sooner your attitude improves, and the faster you start seeing the opportunities showing up. They were probably always there, but the shift in point of view makes them “appear.” Whether it’s the love and support of your family and close ones, the fact that you get to live another day, the things you notice that you’re now so grateful for that you paid no attention to before this happened, whatever it is- focus on it. Keep telling yourself, “All news is good news,” and eventually you’ll prove yourself right.

I wish you the very best.

  • Thank you so much for giving of yourself to danger and the terror of war to protect both your loved ones and ours. Itrust you wll be well again and you will be in my prayers.

I would like to share with you a poem I wrote for the military who are serving both our countries at this time.
If you like it I would love to send you a free copy of it
framed and matted if you send me an address to ship it to.
God bless you and soldiers everywhere who are protecting our families at home.

    The Soldier’s Prayer

    Dear Lord,

I know as morning breaks on high,
‘Twas You who kept us through the night.
By now our loved ones are asleep,
I pray Thee Lord, their souls to keep.
In this distant land; so far from them,
We only know we must defend . . .
    Our schools, families, neighbors, friends.
’Til this cruel war comes to an end.
I pray that You will give me strength
And courage, Lord, to undertake . . .
    Whatever task that You have planned;
Their lives and mine are in your hand.
I know the call this very night,
    Could be to save a buddy’s life;
Please help me fill the call from Thee
And give the best that is in me.
Keep my mind alert and keen
To see and hear, not miss something
That might be overlooked in fright,
And someone die this very night.
Help me Lord to walk with care
    Knowing danger’s always there.
Give me strength to withstand fear
Protecting all that we hold dear.
I know today may be the time,
My life is laid upon the line!
And if I’m called my life to give,
    Protect my loved ones
    who still live.
    Keep me now within
    Thy care;
    Please grant
    Dear Lord,
    “A Soldier’s Prayer.”

  • Hello PFC Jon H,

Thanks to the efforts of your father-in-law Jim, you’ve got an entire brigade of civilians here and throughout the world praying for not only your speedy recovery but the speedy recovery of your buddies and your entire outfit.

Please know that we who are protected by the safety and security that you provide for us are eternally grateful!

The Bible says that there is no greater sacrifice than if one gives up his life for another. Many in Iraq, Afghanistan, and throughout the world have given no less than “the ultimate sacrifice” for us, your brothers.

And so “your brothers” come before our Heavenly Father’s throne to ask for His mercy, His guidance, His protection and His healing Power and Peace to be with you from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. Father, we ask you to send your Holy Spirit to minister to each one, to fill them with the peace and understanding that only you can fill them with. Father we stand on your word that as you send your word of healing in every way, that you be glorified in this situation.

In Jesus’ name, we thank you Heavenly Father for answering our prayers.

PFC Jon, may the Creator of the Universe, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob open the windows of Heaven and pour out His abundant blessings upon you, your buddies, the doctors and nurses, your entire family and anyone you come in contact with, that He may be glorified in the miracles that He is about to do in all of your lives.

    Amen.

Jon, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing guard for us, your brothers.

  • Janice:

    Jon,
I am so sorry that you have suffered during this war and for the loss of your friends and comrades. You and all of the other soldiers have sacrificed so much of yourselves to protect the rest of us in the USA and the people in Iraq. I am proud of all of you, for your courage, your pride, your selflessness. Please believe that you are all heroes to us back home. You will not be forgotten!! You will be honored and appreciated for the rest of your lives. Thank you!!!!
I will pray for your speedy recovery and that you will find peace in knowing that you have done a great service for your family and your country. God Bless America!!! Stay Strong!!

  • Mercy:

    Hi Jon!

Thank you for all you have done for our country. I’ll pray for your prompt recovery. I strongly encourage you to read “The Purpose Driven Life” book. It will help you find answers that only you can discover. And like my mom always told me: “Don’t worry. There is always a light at the end of any dark tunnel”. Take care!

  • Jon-

Gratitude cannot be expressed strongly enough for the heroism you display just by putting on the uniform. God speed on a full recovery physically, and God’s healing peace on your life as you face the memories.

My children know the true definition of the word hero. It is men like you.

    A grateful American,

    Jim Cockrum

  • Hi Jon!

I’m so sorry to hear about your injury, the injuries of your friends, and the loss of your one friend. As I write this, I am praying for your healing, physically and in every way. I’ll also pass this on to the prayer list at Northpoint, a 15,000 member church here in Atlanta.

Just by reading through some of these posts, I can see that there is and is going to be a tremendous amount of prayer and healing heading right at you.

I want you to know that I, my 13 year old son Jonathon and my 5 year old son Caleb are deeply deeply grateful to you and your friends for what you have done and are doing, so we are able to do what we love here.

I’m praying specifically that thru this awful experience, God holds you up and comforts you, and loves on you big time. I have a strong sense that you are going to somehow use this experience for great good.

My thoughts and prayers will be with your during this time.

And when your father-in-law shows up, make sure the nurses don’t let him wear that red Hawaiin shirt in the hospital…..

God bless you and keep you

    Jeff Herring, Jonathon & Caleb

    Jon,
Thank you for being there when your country needed you. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude and best wishes for you and the others that survived. My deepest sympathy for your fallen comrade. I believe that your paths are among the most difficult on this earth to walk and my family and I appreciate your sacrifices.

I wish to include a quote from a truly great lady, Pearl Bailey. ” We look into mirrors but we only see the effects of our times on us — not our effects on others.”

Jon you truly are a hero and a blessing to this country.
You and your friends are in my prayers. May God aide the medical staff in helping God restore your health.
    God Bless You,

We are so thankful for your service to our country. You are the true heros of our time. A real example of bravery and courage. I hope those attributes will help you through healing and rehabilitation.

  • Jon – I grieve with you over the loss of your team-member and the grave injuries to yourself and your fellow soldiers. I will keep your families in my daily meditations.

Such an experience is very traumatic and I hope that you will be able to feel the love and support that surrounds you from your family, your friends, and even complete strangers.

Like the topaz in the toad’s head
the comfort in the terrible histories
was up front, easy to find:
Once upon a time in a kingdom far away.
Even to the dreadful now of news
    we listened comforted
by far timezones, languages we didn’t speak,
    the wide, forgetful oceans.
Today, no comfort but the jewel courage.
The war is ours, now, here, it is our republic
    facing its own betraying terror.
And how we tell the story is forever after.

    – Ursula K. Le Guin

Love to you and yours. Rest, recover in love and light.

  • Hello Jon,

From an Ex-British Royal Marine – I send you heartfelt greetings and wishes for a speedy recovery, together with thanks for all that U.S. and U.K. troops are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Michael

  • Every soldier in Irak and any other war is there serving a duty and believe that they are helping his country and the other country.
These are beautiful ideals and they should be proud of that!
When you believe you are doing good, you really are in your heart!
I love every one of the soldiers for that, and grieve with every loss of young life. Your cause is a noble one and we are proud of you. Regardless of how we feel about this war, we still feel honor to have you guys putting your lives on the line. God will alway help those who believe they are doig good.

  • Thank you for the sacrifice you are making for me..My heartfelt wishes for a complete recovery..the sooner the better..and grateful prayers for you and your friends,

    Sincerely,
    Doc

  • Hi Jon, Wishing you a complete and speedy recovery. There are not words that can show my appreciation for your efforts and those efforts of your fellow soldiers. Your willingness to trade your service and too often lives, is truly inspirational. With 11 members of my family currently serving our country, the soldiers and your dedication are always on my mind.

Thank You for who you are and what you represent,

    Mike

  • Jon,

A mere thank you can never fully express the depth of gratitude I and my family have for the scarifices made by you, your colleagues and your family.

I am blessed to live in Va. Beach and have the honor of hearing and watching the navy jets…seeing the aircraft carriers pulling out…witnessing maneuvers by the seal teams…it is trully an awesome experience to see our country’s armed forces in action daily.

I have many friends in the military…I never fully appreciated the sacrifices thier families make until I witnessed it first hand….with that said

God Bless you…God Bless your family….Know that you are a hero in our eyes…We can’t thank you enough for all that you do in the name of our country.

Praying for your fast and full recovery!

    With our Deepest Gratitude,
Carrie, Mike, Nick & Grey C.

  • Hi, Jon,
Thank you so much for laying your life on the line for our country and our freedom and the lives of others. The Bible says that there is no greater love than a friend who will lay his life down for his friends, and I believe the Lord intends that to be for all of our brothers and sisters in this earth. May God bless you and pour out his healing virtues upon your body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit, and on the others involved. May he bring comfort and peace to all. Remember, Jesus is the healer, and I know this first hand. I am believing for His healing for all of you, and pray for the troops and thier families continuously. We often don’t understand why things that happen are allowed to happen by our Creator, but He promised us that He would always be with us, and would send us a comforter to help us. My prayers are with you, your family and friends, and thier families as well for all your needs to be met abundantly! May God bless you today and every day in Jesus’ name.
    In His service,
    Barbara

Thank you so much for your service to our country and for your brave efforts to support the freedom that we’ve all come to count on.

God doesn’t waste our life experiences, so I expect and I am confidently believing that something wonderful and very good will come out of what you are going through.

    May you be abundantly blessed,

  • Mark:

I really feel sorry for all those – on all sides – that have been caught up in this mess. War is so unnecessary, yet so commonplace. My son is just about to embark upon an Army career – it’s is his choice but as a parent I can’t help but worry.

You have been the unwilling victim of something you knew could happen but could hardly envisage. You friend and colleague was killed and you need strength to get over not only your own physical injuries but the mental torment that you must be feeling.

I don’t know you but I wish you, and all your colleagues, well. I pray that you will overcome your difficulties and regain strength and stature so that you may hide the scars and be with your family and friends again. be sure, when you come through this (and you must) to remember your friends who have not succeeded in doing so. be strong for your family and friends, make new goals to achieve and new targets to aim for. God bless you.

  • Jon,

Thank you cannot begin to describe the gratitude my family wishes to express to you today. Our country has had a long history of men with a purpose standing in the gap so that we can all enjoy the freedoms and life that we do today.

I would recommend a good book, The Light and the Glory” by John Marshall. If I were king, I’d make this book required reading for every American. It depicts the dedication and bravery that our country was built upon and what soldiers such as yourself have continued to do to preserve this, the greatest experiment in democracy the world has ever known.

Our prayers are with you and your team for a speedy and complete recovery. God Bless you and God Bless America.

  • Jon,

It’s guys like you that keep The USA and the rest of the free world a great model to be held by all. You have sacrificed yourself everyday for our American liberties and I thank you for that. Freedom will ring because of your great dedication and love for our country.

You are in my prayers for a speedy recovery and the long and happy life that awaits you. Thank you Jon!

    Best regards,

  • Hi Jon,

Thank you for serving in the military. We are very proud of our US soldiers who have given so much.

    Sincerely,

  • Dear Jon,
After reading all these positive comments and prayers sent for your recovery, I felt so renewed. I’m hoping that you do, too. Just let them wrap you up in a blanket of love and hopefulness. Prayer is effective, and what a lot of power is behind all these expressed here.

It just really goes to show you, and all those serving on America’s behalf, that we do respect and are sympathetic to what our fellow citizens who step up to the call are going through — regardless of our politic beliefs. We honor you with gratitude!

Thank you so much for your courage in volunteering to serve and defend our country. As an Army brat, I know the feeling of being a part of the proud US military family – and I know you feel that same pride.

Over the coming months you will go through a roller coaster of feelings – and there’s nothing any of us out here in cyberland can do to directly help you through those times. Just know that we’re very grateful for you and we stand behind you.

You are blessed with a family who cares for you so much. Please let them in so that they can shower the love you deserve on you.

My best wishes for your speedy recovery.

  • Joel Hunt:

    Hello Jon,

Thank you for your willingness, bravery, and courage in fighting for our great country. Words cannot express the gratitude my family and I feel for you, particularly knowing of your serious injury. God bless you both physically and spiritually. Our prayers are with you.

I wrote a poem a few years ago that I want to dedicate to you.

    THIS THOROUGHBRED NEVER QUITS
(Dedicated to Jon H. who was critically injured in Iraq)

Dignity and grace dominate his gait,
This spirited stallion keeps his head held high,
His endurance legendary, he does not hesitate,
Charging headlong into challenges, not asking why,
    For this thoroughbred never quits!

Although his race is difficult and long,
He keeps himself healthy, steadfast, and strong.
He looks not longingly to the left, nor to the right,
He simply forges forward with all of his might,
    For this thoroughbred never quits!

His legs may grow weary, his lungs brightly burn,
Yet, he does not waver for a single moment!
Determination carries him, though his energy is spent,
Nothing will stop him from making the turn,
    For this thoroughbred never quits!

He realizes fully the race is not his,
Overwhelming at times, his obstacles seem,
His head begins pounding, his clear vision blurs,
Yet, nothing! No, nothing! will vanish his dream,
    For this thoroughbred never quits!

For his loved ones, he wholeheartedly lives,
His life for them, he freely gives.
And, to his last breath, since his love is so pure,
For his beloved wife and son, he will ever endure,
    For this thoroughbred never quits!

  • Jon,

I’m very sorry to hear of your injury and those of your colleagues. Through my family experiences I can relate very closely to where you are now, if for rather different reasons than your own. My father joined the UK military in his mid teens to finish his education to become an engineer in the 1930’s. Sadly, he was injured and he was invalided out before even completing his training. His challenge was to choose a new path in life. He had to work hard but he did better than he could ever have hoped. Fate sometimes has a brutal sense of humour – I was destined for a military career and ironically I could not follow this route because of injuries I had sustained when I was younger (I just didn’t realise that they would sink my plans). Just like my father I had to choose a new path. I don’t know how your cards will stack but if you do have to make changes to “plan A” then with commitment you will be amazed at what you can achieve. You have a great family on your side and they will give you the strength to pull through.

Very best wishes from the south of England. Keep up the good work.

    All the best, Richard

  • Good luck, Jon. You’ve yout your family’s love and support behind you, that will take you very far. Thank you and wishing you a boundless recovery. Kay, Boston, MA.

Read some good stories of others who’ve had to face big challenges; take inspiration from where ever you can find it and above all buy some comedy tapes, watch7 listen to them often and laugh, laugh , laugh!!! A merry heart doeth good…like a medicine. Blessings and great expectations to you.

stepped up to the plate in the past to do so–
    often at great personal sacrifice.

    Thanks for your service!

  • Thank you for your sacrifices and courage. From one old soldier to a young one, you will never be forgotten. The people of this country are behind you and wish you a fast recovery.

    Gary

  • Joh,

The work that you and other young men and women do for us is tremendous. I thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

As the father of a son, a Marine, who has served recently in Iraq, I understand the stress that you and your family face as a result of your service and incresingly due to your injury. You and the members of your team are special to our family. We will pray for you, your team, and your family. We hope for your speedy and full recovery.

We thank you for being a hero to us and more importantly to your son. We thank you for being willing to protect our freedom.

    Hey Jon,

Looks like you’ve got some reading ahead of you here! When I first came to this page, there were 98 comments. Fifteen minutes later, there are 215!

As a proud American, I don’t think there are ever enough opportunities for me to express my gratitude to our brave men and women who serve to protect our freedoms. I am extremely proud and grateful for your service, as I am for your brothers and sister in arms.

My nephew joined the Guard last year, and is expecting to go over in 2009. It’s said to think that we’ll still be there then, but I know it’s a reality. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t worry and pray for him, his safety, and all of our troops.

I’m sorry for the losses you have already experienced in your young life, and I hope you know that your friends who have gone before you would want you to live a full and happy life, as you would have wanted for them. Love your wife, your child, and your life (and tolerate your father-in-law!) as best you can!

    God bless you Jon!

    ~Stephanie

God bless you, your family, and all of your brethren in service. Please know that you are not alone in your healing process. There is a ton of positive energy coming your way and to that of your fellow service men/women. Soak in that positive energy as much as you can.

    All my best!
    Kevin

  • John:

    God Bless,

  • Hi Jon,

May you and your Team members make a very speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with you guys.

The Power of your mind when recalling special times or when listening to some particular music can generate a sizzle of endorphins within you to help your healing process.

Think positive, think only of the good things – your family, your friends and anything you hold most dear and then target something special as a major Goal for the future.

Do not let anybody tell you that you cannot do it because you can and you will. Be courageous, be determined and let nothing stop you from achieving your goal.

The best of luck to you and your team.

    Take good care

    Martin Jeszke (UK and US)

  • Judah:

A speedy recovery to you, Jon and to all of your comrades who may be struggling with physical or emotional ailments.

I have read of and seen photographs of the experiences that our devoted troops in Iraq are involved with. Stay strong and continue to serve our country and what we stand for. We are grateful for the contributions of citizens like you who are helping to assure a fairer world for all, not just Americans.

May we hear good news soon!

Thank you for your noble efforts, Jon. I wish you a speedy recovery. My prayers are with you and your family.

  • Thoughts are with you from here in UK. Most of us believe we should never have gone into Iraq putting our boys and girls at risk. As usual politicians never listen to the views of the people and make decisions without consulting us. My personal view and that of many Brits is we as in the Brits and Americans should pull out and tell the ubber Rich Saudis to finance and provide security and an assistance to Iraq. It is not our war so lets get out.

  • Jon,

I’ll be thinking of you and your family during your recovery. I’m wishing you a speedy recover so you can live life with your family.

    Take Care
    Holly P (NC)

  • Praying for Jon and your family…

    Get well soon, Jon.

  • PFC Jon H. My husband and I were both in Iraq and we can relate a little to what you are going through. My husband was medically discharged, and let me tell you. Walter Reed is a great hospital, and you will get the best treatment. Thank you so much for each and every sacrifice that you have made. Without soldiers like you, none of us would be free to have these blogs and speak our mind. Thank you!

  • Dear Jon,

It’s amazing isn’t it how pale and inadequate “Thank you” can seem. It’s about all we’ve got so A big Indiana THANK YOU to you and all your friends and family. I wish you courage as you reclaim your life and its true path. I am so sorry for your injuries.
Read some good stories of others who’ve had to face big challenges; take inspiration from where ever you can find it and above all buy some comedy tapes, watch & listen to them often and laugh, laugh , laugh!!! A merry heart doeth good…like a medicine. Blessings to you and great expectations for you.

  • Sandy PIerce:

    Dear Jim,

Please convey to your son-in-law, Jon, and his friends how proud and thankful we are of them that they have made these tremendous sacrifices for the rest of us. I don’t know that most of us could be this brave and courageous to put our lives at stake that way that they have. We are all indebted to them for thier willingness to serve on all of our behalf.

It is heartbreaking to hear of their being harmed and I will pray them and their families. May God grant your son-in-law a speedy recovery.

    Sandy

  • Dale in Canada:

    Greetings Jon,
Your father-in-law has educated, as well as humored many over the years, and it saddens me to think a close member of his family has been affected by such circumstances.
As your close neighbour, we too have young men and women in the region helping to preserve the western world’s freedom and security. It is easy to forget how you all spend your day over there until we hear of such an incident. I am grateful to travel all over North America without the risks that you faced daily. For that alone I thank you!
I wish you a speedy recovery and hope that you watch what your father-in-law does so that you can emulate him and create enough income to look after your family and reach that other freedom that we all strive for as well.

Best wishes from your Canadian friends.

  • Joan:

    Dear Jon,

I am so happy you are back in the states, safe, albeit injured. Thank you for your bravery and character. I don’t know what I would do if faced with the same challenge. I am very proud to be an American. When I think about our heros, our troops in Iraq who are doing so much to protect the freedom and self determination of every fellow human being, I realize how special this country is. Thank you. Joan

  • Bob B in Boulder:

    Jon,
Not having walked in your shoes I can’t begin to say I understand how tough it must be over there, I can only imagine how difficult it must really be.
As we go about our daily lives here in the US, we know that the war continues to rage on hour by hour, day after day and troops like you and others continue to fight and sacrifice day and night to help make the world a safer place for the rest of us. I thank you for your sacrifice and your commitment…we are are all in your debt….our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family…Here’s to a speedy and complete recovery

  • Kimberly Spear:

    Jon,

Thank you for being faithful in your service
    to freedom.
Faith is the substance of things hoped for.

I pray you have a quick and complete healing
of your injuries, and a peaceful and blessed
    holiday season with your family.

    My best,
    Kimberly Spear

  • Dear Jon,

Thank you for keeping us safe.

  • David Garfinkel:

    Jon,

I’ve known your father-in-law for a long time, as a friend, co-author, business partner, and mentor (make no mistake, HE mentored ME!). He’s a good man. He wouldn’t be doing this for you otherwise.

Listen, I know what happened to you hurts, you were giving your best for the rest of us and you don’t deserve what happened to you. It’s just how the cards fell.

What I want to say is, without sounding like Pollyana, to count your blessings. The world might seem like a very scary and cold place right now, and as an American I wish we were taking better care of our Vets than we are. But you are lucky to have family that cares about you the way you do. Jim in particular is loyal as the day is long, and your mother-in-law is an especially wonderful person, too.

My heart goes out to you and I wish you a speedy recovery.

    David

  • Tom:

You and all of the troops overseas are in my prayers. Thank you for going to a strange and far away land to keep us safe. God Bless you and your loved ones! and God Bless America!!

  • Dear Jon,

Be Strong…Be Brave and know that there are many who love you.

  • Damien:

    Hi Jon,

All the way from Ireland. I just want to wish you all the best and a speedy recovery to you and your friends.

We tend to forget the sacrifice you guys make for the rest of us and unfortunatley it’s times like these that bring it home.

We’ll raise a Guinness to you in the pub this week.

    Take care.

  • Jon,
We do not know each other, but I have been a follower of your father-in-law for some time. I am always saddened to hear of the injuries and deaths of our people, so much so that I refuse to watch the news or read newspapers. I was recently personally touched by the combat when a young man from our church, the same age and personal friend of my son, was deployed with his unit to Iraq. I pray every day for his safety, but I now add you to my personal communication with God, for your recovery to be a quick and complete work. I have never served in the military. No matter what any of us think about the war, you were called and answered the call of our country, for that I am grateful and proud. I pray no more of our young patriots be asked to sacrifice for this cause.

God speed a quick recovery. Enjoy the love and attention of your family.

  • Jon,
As an active duty Soldier myself I know the trials and tribulations you face on a daily basis. I’m at the end of my career but I’m thankful knowing we have young leaders such as yourself taking up the reins to do what many will never experience, and that is protecting our country against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

I’m proud to call you teammate and wish you a speedy recovery and sincerly thank you for what you’re doing for this country. Keep your spirits high and get better.

    Stay stong young man…….Army Strong!!

    Respectfully,
    CPT(P) Timothy A. Gorman (TimG)

  • Bill & Pat Puetz:

We have been praying and supporting our troops from day one. Our son is a Capitan in the Marine Corps and has served 4 (7month) tours in Iraq and has had far too many of his troops killed or severely injured. God bless the valor and sacrifice our men and women in the service are making for our freedom. We thank you and wish you the best for your future. Bill & Pat Puetz

  • PAM HORAN:

    DEAR JON,

LET ME FIRST TO START OFF THIS CONVERSATION AS SAYING THANK YOU FOR MY FREEDOM. I APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DID IN IRAQ FOR US. YOU ARE A HERO. I PRAY THAT YOUR FLIGHT HOME IS SWIFT AND QUICK. I PRAY WHEN YOU GET TO WALTER REED HOSPITAL THAT THE DOCOTRS TREAT YOU WITH RESPECT AND DIGNITY. I PRAY FOR YOUR RECOVERY SO YOU CAN RETURN HOME WITH YOUR FAMILY. MAY YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY BE BLESSED ON YOUR JOURNEY BACK TO RECOVERY. AND MAY YOU FIND PEACE IN
