When Dale Carnegie announced his lecture at the Carnegie Hall in the middle of the great depression, everybody thought nobody would show up because people "should be worried about paying their bills". The opposite happened. It also was a great time for self-help and make money "gurus" because when people have no money, all they have is hope, and if they have to choose, they don't pay their mortgage to buy "the solution" for their problems.
