Podcasting: The future of info-marketing

Jim Edwards here with an article that will change the way
you think about “simple” MP3 files…

The concept discussed in this article (below) is NOT just
for “geeks” and computer “nerds!”

Mark my words…

… this will cause a fundamental change in the way
information is shifted around, shared, and consumed online
by “real” people like you and me in the very near future.

Combine this with some recent moves at Google, and online
video consumption is NOT far behind.

The best advice I can give you as a subscriber is to pay
attention to this technology
and how it develops in the
coming months.

Podcasting: Internet Radio On Demand… and MORE!

- by Jim Edwards

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

If you haven’t heard the term “podcast” yet, you will.

It’s about to blow the world of online audio through the
roof as every Tom, Dick and Shirley can now operate a high
powered Internet Radio station providing on-demand audio
(and shortly, video) with nothing more than a microphone,
simple software, and a little imagination.

Just like cable TV in the 1980’s gave smaller networks and
individuals a voice on television, podcasting gives
individuals a voice (literally) through online audio.

Podcasting is actually the audio form of “blogging,” where
individuals share their thoughts in writing over time on a
dynamic webpage known as a “blog.”

With blogging, subscribers and other blog publishers
subscribe to and cross promote each other’s content by
linking to and writing about each other.

With podcasting, the author shares his or her thoughts in
audio form (MP3) and subscribers download and listen to the
audio either on their computers, burn the files to CD, or
transfer the files to one of the increasingly popular
portable MP3 players.

In fact, the term “podcasting” draws its name from the
iPod, created by Apple Computers.

Initially you might think the only people podcasting are
geeks and computer nerds, but that’s not the case.

If you imagine “talk radio” meets “free cable access” then
you have and idea of what pocasting is now and how it could
evolve in the future.

Right now, any idiot (like me) with a microphone and
something to say can create an online radio show.

This type of access to media that reaches a world-wide
market enables smaller, niche publishers to develop a
world-wide following that just isn’t monetarily feasible in
traditional mass-media.

That means talk shows like “Chihuahua Breeding” or
“Motorcycle Fashion Weekly” that could never hope to afford
air time in a local market, can now develop an audience on
the Internet.

Log on to www.PodCastAlley.com to peruse a wide range of
available shows on everything from dog training to wine
selection and tasting tips (one of the most popular).

Despite all this potential power, podcasting remains in an
infancy stage right now.

But, the Internet has always proven in the past that a
powerful but simple technology will always find a way to
make itself felt quickly.

All it needs to explode is a few people to lead the way and
show exactly how to use the technology to entertain and
educate subscribers.

I also think two worlds will evolve for podcasting program
publishers, just like cable vs. network television.

Some content will remain free (network TV), while some
subscribers will gladly pay for more specific “niche” or
pay-per-view content (cable TV).

As the quality of the programming increases along with more
widespread acceptance of the tools necessary to consume the
content (MP3 players and portable video players),
podcasting will grow to stand beside other mainstream
media.

It won’t happen overnight, and it won’t penetrate every
market, but as members of the “global village” seek to find
and feel a connection with like-minded individuals,
regardless of their physical location, podcasting provides
a cheap, powerful, and innovative solution for that basic
human need.

Jason Cain :

Aloha Jim,

While podcasting is neat, I do not think it is the future of info-marketing.

And the reason?

Noise.

The more people that begin producing content, the more competition for ears and minds there will be.

Another thing to remember is: the Internet is still primarily a visual medium. It is one thing to scan a blog, looking for a headline of piece of content that is tasty — but to listen to a whole audio broadcast?

I do believe that smart ass, controversial, in-your-face marketers with truly VALUABLE content to share (such as yourself) will profit off of it. But most marketers will fall short…

Semper fi,

Jason Cain

PS: In the blogging community the podcasting debate already has a tag line. People are asking…

“Are you smoking the podcasting dope?”

Here is a link to an interesting blog post…

Hey Jim,

It’s interesting to look at PodcastAlley by genre. For instance: Music/Radio = 552 Podcasts. Environment = 13.

Cheers,

Neil Bergman :

Hi Jim,

Thank you for another interesting article. Tell me, where can you find the software tools to produce a podcast? I presume the actual .mp3 files of the podcast have to be hosted on your website. Does it require a special podcast player to download and play them, or will regular MP3 players like Winamp or Windows Media Player play them? Can people just stream the audio from the website without first saving it locally? And finally, have you produced any podcasts yourself?

Having just launched my podcast, the Tim ‘Gonzo’ Gordon Show, and seen the traffic increase on website because of simply listing the show on the various podcast directories, my initial reaction is that you are right on the money. I’ve gotten some good reaction from the podcast and can see - even in its infancy - that podcasting can really take off.
Not to mention the number of corporations that are getting involved, from large radio corporations to other businesses that just want to get the word out and see this as a viable way. The big challenge for an individual podcast of course is to find and keep and build a consistent audience!

Thanks for the article, Jim. Very informative. I’ve been seeing a bit here and there about Podcasting and it seems like a great new technology. It’ll fit great with my site niche.

I’m not sure about it being the future of info publishing, but Podcasting will be a nice addition for info publishers if for no other reason than it’ll give people another chioce of delivery. Choice is good.

Jim Bowie :

If you wnat an overload of info on Pocasting, just Google “Podcvast”. Yikes!! There’s a lot out there and I can see Jason’s point. Sooooo many Podcasts, Soooo little time. Now Podvideo, that wouild keep the noise and the visual and if you could network your computer and TVs you could stream it all over the house!!

Jim,

Your Article shows only the tip of the iceberg. I think podcasting has yet to find its voice.

However, I also think that podcasting (or Audio Casting as I prefer to call it) is perfect for a hungry army of people who need the information from things such as tele-classes, and timed events and yet they are not able to attend.

It could simply be because they are on the other side of the globe. Audio Casting is a tool and like any other tool, Some will be able to create works of art while others will not.

While some people are looking to figure out how to monitize thier Casts, others are quietly making it work.

This is like nothing else.

You can truly teach the world what once was only available to people in your own time zones.

It looks to me very much like just another way for the porn folk to get content past the spam filters. Now I will get emails that not only offer to improve my sex-life but will show me how and how much.

I received my very first spam porn video clip in my email inbox this morning. Since there is no text, and the URL will always be different, how the hell do I filter it?

As more people use Broadband, there will be an ever increasing volume of this rubbish that will drown out any positive use of this technology. Just like spam is doing now to email.

I think I am going to have to resort to checking email via web mail before I turn on the email client so I can filter first.

Either that or stop using email altogether.

Unfortunately rss feeds are not the answer.

The biggest problem with everthing IT and internet related is far too many people develop tools based on the concept of “because I can” rather than “because I should”.

If any technology can be mis-used, it will be. Business before any Thought.

Earl :

Jim,

My course on how-to podcast was the first available online (Jan 01, 2005). It’s an ebook and 9 video series that details step by step how to podcast. The affiliate program is operational for all you takers.. If you would like to check it out go to and give it a look.

I’m not looking for free advertising space on your blog and my intent is not to abuse your comment section. However, you were looking for a how-to and my course is available. If you take this post down I fully understand.

The course is now the “podfather” of hundreds of podcasts, it’s proven, and it works great. Since most folks have a blog already up and running it’s really feasible for someone to be podcasting in a flash.

TL Pierce wrote a non-biased review at his blogforfunandprofit.com on February 24th, if you look through his archives it’s still there. After speaking to TL on the phone and VIA email he told me he was going to review it and he wrote a great review. By the way TL is probably the greatest person that I’ve met online I’ve spoken with him since then many times and I’m humbled that he would take time to talk to me about virtually anything.

Thanks Jim for introducing me to such quality folks on your blog I never would have met him without it.

With Much Respect,
Earl Lear

Nothing like making a statement to bring out all the “purists” to show us where to go and what to do… watch the posts…. you want a link or url to your website on my blog… DO A TRACKBACK… otherwise your link gets edited off and you will earn my discontent.

Podcasting ain’t going away…

…and YES… I’ve been doing the equivalent of podcasting for the last 2 years with one exception… I didn’t have an xml file to show the way for an aggregator… but that’s about the change in a very BIG way.

Is pocasting the “only thing” - NO!

Is blogging the “only thing” - NO!

Is everyone going to do it? - NO!

Are people going to make a ton of money with it? - YES!

Will all the “experts” have an opinion? YES!

Smoke the dope… or don’t smoke the dope…

I personally don’t care… I report the facts as I see them…

I just love it when the “experts” get their little hackles up :-)
OOOOOO now *THIS* is fun :-)

Doug :

Jim, is there a new ebook-a-brewing? “Podcasting Secrets Exposed?”

Hey Jim–

Sorry couldn’t make it to the Big Seminar this time, but hope to see you at Yanik’s.

I’ve been running a podcast since January. It helped pick up a few clients and I enjoying do it.. So was it worth it — a definite YES. Is it hard to keep up with — certainly so. Just as running a membership site, a blog, a coaching club can be hard to keep up with as well.

Good morning Jim,

It’s interesting to see how ready people are to draw lines in the sand about Podcasting, but haven’t looked much past it to the video you talk about being somewhere in the future. Well, that video is here too.

Individuals have been using video offline for a long time and are quickly adopting the streaming online video services too. But businesses, both online and offline, have been terribly slow to recognize the power and simplicity of today’s streaming tools.

You can operate your own TV station as well as a radio station right now. One company offers an account that comes equipped with live broadcasting tools with no limit on recording time(with Powerpoint and interactive polls and text chat), video chat, videoemail (with recording time limits) and you can grab the code to post those videos to your site. Or rather, post the link to their position on a streaming host server.

So, I’m going to make a small wager and say that I think both podcasting and online video will find their legs in terms of a growing market share, and their best applications for online use by the end of the year. But…

You have spent the money on the kind of audio equipment needed to produce high quality shows, and more importantly, the time to learn how to do them well. We could wish that everyone would approach both podcsting and video creation with the same care, but I fear this year we will also see both sadly abused and misused by those who don’t take that time or care so much.

A columnist at Clickz recently said 2005 would be the “tipping point” year for video just a month ago (sorry to say I’ve forgotten her name and can’t find the column now), but I don’t think anyone had even begun to consider podcasting would amount to much, and look at what’s already happened.

Keith :

I think podcasting is going to evolve into a great medium. Some online radio shows servicing are already getting 2 million listeners a month.

Podcasting, like Jim said is internet radio on demand. I think internet radio will take it biggest jump as we see the internet going more and more wireless.

I was actually able to create my own “test” podcast in about 10 Minutes using a software program called feed for all. I have no affiliation with this company. Just though it was a great peice of software.

Just think - A global niche radio station from the corner of your living room.

Best wishes to everyone.

Keith
