Cool, Free Video Plugin for WordPress

IMPORTANT: One thing I noticed… in Internet Explorer the file would auto-play, even though I had auto-play set to “false”. However, when I just took OUT the variable “autoplay=” then it paused at start automatically.

Also, I just noticed that it offsets the preview picture a little bit when it’s paused. I think it’s the THEME we’re using on the blog, because the offset does NOT happen on the other sites I just tested it on (which, of course, use a different theme).

(Demo Video 1) No “poster” file provided – that’s why black screen.

(Demo Video 2) This one we added the poster file “preview” picture.

-
NOTE: I’ve been using this primarily in auto-play mode on web pages with video sales letters. In fact, this is the first time I’ve tried to use the pause function.? However, for a sales letter that auto-plays the video, this plugin is the BOMB!

(Rated ★★★★)? I definitely give it 4 out of 5 stars!

For the shortcut codes, download this text file media-elements-info (it won’t let me show the codes in the post – it wants to put videos wherever I put the text :( )

I hope you enjoy it… please put in any comments below. :D

Appreciate this Jim.

Seems like I can always count on you for quality, useful ideas and resources.

Thanks Jim.

“We blew some s*** up!” You youngsters…

Thank you very much for sharing. Quite new to your list so this was a nice treat. The plugin videos look very much like Easy Video Player but for free! I’m guessing you recommend using Amazon S3 for hosting media files?

Hey Jim,

Good info, and it’s nice to have a choice between all the WP video players out there. This one looks decent, however the default industry standard for WP seems to be the JW Player. Any thoughts on it, likes, dislikes, etc. Especially now that it fully supports HTML 5 in v 5.10?

About the JW Player:

The JW Player? is the most popular open source video / audio player for the Web. It supports playback of any format the Adobe Flash Player and HTML5 browsers can handle (FLV, H.264, MP4, VP8, WebM, MP3, AAC, JPG, PNG and GIF). It also supports various streaming and playlist formats (including RMTP, HTTP, live streaming and more) and a wide range of playback options. And its support for all of the major CDNs and adaptive bitrate switching mean you can deliver high quality content around the globe.

Take care Jim,

Scott Krech

Hi Jim,

Thanks for this info on what looks like a terrific plugin.

Since you said the plugin worked on Androids, I decided to try it on my LQ Optimus S (L5670) Android phone (Android 2.3.3). The player didn’t work on my phone. I wish it had. Maybe you have some ideas. It looks like a great player, since it apparently supports many platforms.

I used the Dolphin browser and also tried it in the paid version of Skyfire, which can often handle flv videos, by using its special video button. That’s why I paid for the pro version.

In both browsers it loads the video for ~30 seconds and then announces that it can’t play the video.

In Skyfire, the special video button didn’t even function on this page, as it normally would on other pages I’ve been to.

Still hoping for a “cure”.

Charles

Jim,

Fantastic tip!! I’ve tried several other video plugins and they seem rather clunky. This one looks really simple and effective.

Now, it’s time to grab that cup of coffee you talked about.

Scott,

Re: JW Player

I agree it’s the standard… but it’s not free. And the point here was to give people a FREE plugin ;)

If you read their license (unless it’s changed) all the people who are using the free version in a commercial capacity are violating the TOS. JW Player is the standard, but it’s not free for commercial use (unless their TOS has changed since the last time I looked at it).

Jim

July 12, 2012

Alan,

Yes… I use Amazon S3 for most of the free stuff I share… and this player works great for that. There are other players with more features, but this was the best FREE one I’ve found.

Jim

July 12, 2012

Jim, thanks. I use quite a lot of video plugins and was not aware of this one.

BTW you can include code examples in blog posts. Just paste it between HTML “code” or “blockquote” tags (using HTML editor but might work in WYSIWYG mode too, depending on your editor used). The difference between these tags is that first is meant for citing computer code (listing) and the latter is for citing quotes (e.g. from famous people) and can render with real quotes (characters) on page – but it might give better look and/or indentation (before changing CSS files :-) .

Let’s try blockqoute (you can delete this and below if it doesn’t render well due to comment limitations in WordPress). Notice I’ve used dots in “center” tag – because HTML code still renders in WordPress even in blockqoute and code parts!

MediaElement.js – HTML5 Audio and Video
http://mediaelementjs.com/
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/media-element-html5-video-and-audio-player/

Auto-play
[video mp4="VIDEOLINK" autoplay="true" width="540" height="305"]

Pause at start
[video mp4="VIDEOLINK" poster="PICTURELINK" width="540" height="305"]

July 12, 2012

One more thing – regarding WordPress changing code (your previous post, inserting Camtasia Studio 8 video – comments are now closed).

That’s the default behaviour in WP (WYSIWYG strips HTML tags it doesn’t like or better to say doesn’t allow in default WP setup). Without messing up with WP internal code and have it modified back with each WP upgrade, check this out:

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/html-code-reformatted-by-visual-editor#post-2748469

E.g. disable default TinyMCE editor and use better alternatives. The code from HTML mode (editor) will be preserved.

I just gotta tell you! :-)

Great Plugin. Thank you for sharing.

Just gotta ask you… Have you seen Alex Jones’ Gun Show?

Tom G

Great little plugin indeed! I had found it a while back but forgotten all about it (went into that proverbial “to do” list, ya know?). Thanks for the reminder – I now set up two sites to use this instead of JW Player for vids and great to see them work across all platforms now.

BTW, you may have mentioned it in the past but what is the software you use to do all the drawings, handwriting, etc. during your presentations? That’s some slick stuff!

Thanks again…

July 20, 2012

Tom,

Glad you liked it… yeah, that happens to me all the time. Sigh :-)
