Is the Google “slap” just a bunch of hype?
Jim Edwards here with a "dog days of summer" update…
I don’t know about you, but I think this is the hottest summer I can remember in a long, long time… I’ve been baking like a hot potato in a 500 WATT Microwave!
I’ve got 3 updates for you below, so let’s just dive right in to the good stuff…
-= GOOGLE "SPLAP" JUST A BUNCH OF HYPE? =-
There’s a lot of misinformation and hype going on right now about the changes at Google Ad Words and their policies concerning landing pages.
I’ve been doing experiments and watching what’s going on… my buddy and Google AdWords expert, Perry Marshall, has been doing the same.
In this "in-depth" video we discuss what Google wants… how to give them what they want (quality content for visitors)… and how to get what you want (SALES & Opt-ins) at the same time.
Watch the video here:

When I opened up subscriptions to my private subscribers-only website this past June, even I was a little taken aback when we sold out all 750 "Charter Subscriptions" in less than 30 hours!
When we launched the site, I promised to give the "Charter Subscribers" a head start by not allowing any new subscribers for 100 days… which means we will start accepting applications for the remaining 250 subscribers (we’re capping it at 1000) on September 14th.
Based on past experience, I don’t expect it to take long to sell out those remaining subscriptions.
If you want IN, then make sure you’re signed up for the priority notification list because it’s first-come, first-served when we throw open the gates again in September

Don’t hate yourself for missing out a 2nd time!
-= CLEANING UP MY OFFICE (the saga continues) =-
As you know, we just finished our "scratch & dent" sale last week to get my wife’s office cleared out of a few boxes I’ve let collect in there.
Well, in the final cleanup… I found a few items I’d totally forgotten about (strange stuff only I would have)
Most other people have old magazines, books, toys, etc… I have boxed copies of "Sound Forge" and "Camtasia" as well as brand-new head-set microphones lying around - who knew
So, instead of having a sale, we put these items up for sale on eBay.
If you need a copy of Camtasia or Sound Forge or a new headset mic, you should check out these auctions that expire in 3 days.

Mary :
I saw the video on the Google Slap and it was very informative.
My question remains: what about a single page sales letter website that purposely has no links except the Order page? How are these websites faring with Google now?
Thank you.

Frederic Patenaude :
Same question here, especially with Jim having so many mini-sites with basically just a salespage. How will that change?

BigJim :
Mary,
Some of those mini-sites are still doing great in google… others are not…. it appears pretty hit or miss at this point and I have adopted a wait and see attitude.
Frederic,
Actually, my approach won’t change much at all… there are dozens of ways to generate traffic besides google… my business has not been affected one bit… so, honestly, I don’t plan to change much of anything at this point… nor do I plan to deviate significantly in my teaching to others.

Ralph :
I watched the Google slap video and it was very informative. I’m now in the process of optimizing my site the way you recommned, which was slapped with $1.00 per click - not too bad, but unacceptable compared to what I am used to paying.
My question is: how do you get Google to re-visit and re-grade your existing site once it is optimized? Or, would it be better to just register a new domain, load the new and improved site, and then create a duplicate campaign?
Thanks!
BigJim :
Ralph,
I would try just pausing that campaign, start a new one, use the new optimized landing page links, and start over.
Jim
Ralph :
WOW JIM!
With your help I have “cracked the code” on the Google slap. I’m back up and running.
In the process I found out something very interesting.
Even with the new campaign, pointing to the same problem page, I was getting “inactive” projections and $1.00 - $5.00 minimum bids with the traffic estimator.
So I went on Google, did a searched on my keywords, and found the top ad that was displaying. Clicked on the ad, got the competitor’s URL, and entered THIS into my ads. Just pointing it to a different domain suddenly activated all the keywords at the usual low rates. Then I knew the problem was not the keywords, but the landing page.
Then, I went back and changed the URL to point to a new page within MY domain. Presto, I’m back up and running.
The point: when you enter your ad text and landing page URL Google spiders the site right away. It either passes muster or it doesn’t. My minipage / opt-in form got the slap. My fully loaded sales page with opt-in form made it through OK with the exact same keyword set.
Thanks for your help… I hope the additional info helps too.
BigJim :
Ralph!
That is awesome!!
Thank you for sharing that with everyone… that’s exactly what I wanted to hear
Great job on taking action!
