3 Simple Mindset “Tricks” To Take Consistent Action

If you’ve ever asked “How can I get myself to take consistent action long enough to get results?” then this article is for you!

At 5:00 a.m. this morning I started a new exercise routine. I’ve been exercising consistently for about 10 months now with no breaks. I’ve lost 45 lbs. and have been setting a lot of personal records on my walk times, pushup reps, etc. In fact, I’ve been thinking I’m pretty “hot stuff” — until this morning. Today I added exercises (pull-ups and cinderblock presses) which weren’t even an option several months ago, but now are just within reach (which forces me to improve).

However, today being the first day, I was sucking wind and, for a brief moment, I wanted to give up and go back to the routine I did previously.

Why?

Because that routine is “safe” and I know I can do it – I feel competent with that routine. (Truth be told, I actually feel a bit “studly” with that set.) But the number one thing that made me want to quit, even for a moment, was the feeling of “starting over from scratch!” That feeling of starting over at zero can get a bit depressing. But then I had a thought which I believe can change your entire perspective and direction just like it did mine.

Here it is.

“I’m not starting over from scratch, I’m just shifting gears!”

I’m just starting a new phase and I’m literally in the middle of “hitting the next level!” This isn’t starting over, this is REAL progress! I’m in the middle of making it happen! Every action I take is getting me one step closer to my goal!

And you know what? That’s true for taking action towards ANY goal, especially for adults!

We all have so much experience and have done so many things that we never want to start over. We know how hard starting over is. But, when you look at it from the perspective of just shifting gears and actively engaging in the process of performing at the next level, you realize you’re NEVER starting from scratch — you’re just shifting gears.

So that’s Mind Trick #1: Never start over from scratch, just shift gears in a new direction.

Still “Stuck?” Here are 2 more tricks that work for me.

Mind Trick #2: Baby Steps

Just keep breaking down the actions you need to take into smaller steps. Bite-sized pieces make anything easier. Then, set a TIME in your calendar / day-planner for WHEN you’ll take each ACTION.

Don’t move on to anything else until that action gets done.

The “mind trick” here is to keep breaking things down until your brain says, “Oh, I can do that now.”

You literally trick your mind into transitioning from “can’t-do” to “will-do” by breaking things down until the “can-do” switch flips in your head.

Mind Trick #3: The Path of Least Resistance

This is my favorite trick (even though it seems a bit of a mean trick to play on yourself). I like to pull this trick when there’s something on my to-do list that I’m obviously avoiding, no matter how far down I break the task into baby steps. This is for the things that seem to never get done, but you know deep down they MUST get done to keep moving forward.

When there is something on your immediate action list you’re avoiding, do all the OTHER tasks first, but don’t add any more items to the list.

SIDE NOTE: You really shouldn’t have more than 3-4 items on your immediate action list at any time. Having more just makes you feel overwhelmed.

Once you get down to one item left on the immediate action list, add one more action item to the list.

What do you add? Simple

Add an action you see as “WORSE” than the last one already on the list.

You laugh?

I’m telling you from personal experience, putting down something you perceive as worse than the other action item will make your brain automatically seek the path of least resistance. You’ll automatically start taking the action you avoided previously so you can avoid this new action that seems worse instead.

It seems like a mean little trick to play, but it’ll get those tough actions done fast!

The bottom line with taking consistent action comes down to knowing the big picture of where you’re headed, breaking everything down into small, bite-sized actions you BELIEVE you can take, and organizing your work so the path of least resistance actually gets you where you want to go. Action is the key to getting results, but the right strategies make taking that action a whole lot easier!

How To Find Your Passion – 3 Easy Steps

Discover What Is Your Passion!

What is your passion? How to find your passion?

Two critical questions if you want to achieve success.

Passion is what drives all successful online businesses. Sure, some people get lucky. Others make it on pure hard work and dogged determination. Others get in at the right time with the right thing. But, for the most part, the people who really make it big online have found and followed their true passion!

What is your passion? Here are 3 Steps that will help you discover your true passion so you can follow it to success.

Step 1: What activities do you LOVE to DO?

The first step in discovering what I call your Passion “Sweet Spot” is to analyze what you love to DO. Define the activities you love to engage in. Take a little time and think about these questions:

What would you do for free because you love it so much?

What do you think about doing all day at “work” that you can’t wait to go home and get started?

What do you think about doing all week while “living for the weekend?”

What do you start doing and then turn around and realize 3 hours just passed in a blink of an eye?

What activity do you engage in that leaves you feeling MORE energized when you’re done than when you started?

Those questions help you discover you PASSION in action!

Step 2: What gets your emotions and feelings into overdrive?

The next step in discovering your passion is to analyze what gets you into emotional extremes. Emotion creates energy. Anything that gets you into a highly emotional state indicates potential for channeling high ENERGY.

What makes you REALLY happy? (I mean deliriously happy!)

What makes you REALLY mad? (Injustice?)

What gets you fired up and ready to fight for a cause? (A personal crusade?)

What makes you feel total bliss or fun?

What makes you feel 110% alive and “in the moment?”

These questions help you find the energy that will fuel your passion in action!

Step 3: What gives you intense satisfaction?

The final step in discovering your passion is to think about what makes you feel a sense of real accomplishment. Figuring out your passion means more than just whatever you love doing or whatever gets you pumped up. It means discovering what gives you that inner sense that you’re making a difference and having an impact on the world. That’s part of passion too!

What makes you stop and say “Wow! Look what I did!”?

What makes you proud of yourself even when nobody else is looking?

What do others stop you and say “Wow! That’s a helluva job you did there!”?

What do others ask you to help them with that makes you feel intense satisfaction?

Intense satisfaction helps put a powerful reason “Why” behind your passion.

Bottom line:

Finding your passion means finding the place where what you do, what you feel, and what satisfies you all converge. That’s your true passion. The kind of passion that can sustain you through all circumstances and keep you focused and “in the game” when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Take some time to go through these three steps to find your passion. Why? Because finding your passion will literally change the entire direction of your life – forever!

Time Management Tips: 3 Steps To Get ANYTHING Done!

How can I change poor time management habits that are stopping me from completing anything?

From my experience, poor time management comes down to one of a few problems. If you’re having problems managing your time and getting things done, chances are you’re falling down in one or more of these areas:

  1. Wimpy or non-existent reason WHY you’re doing what you’re doing (“what’s the point?”);
  2. Overwhelmed by the sheer volume of your to-do list;
  3. Or, you have no clue “where to start” or what to do next.

So here’s what I do when time seems to slip away and nothing gets done.

Step 1 – Write down your #1 Current Goal / Project on a piece of paper.

Get very clear on the #1 priority in your life right now. Too many priorities and too many projects mean nothing gets done. Pick one and STICK with it until it’s done. It won’t happen any other way.

Step 2 – Get very clear on WHY you’re taking action.

Write down WHY you’re taking action on the same piece of paper directly under your current goal or project

This gives you leverage on yourself when things get tough. Also, it helps your subconscious understand why what you’re doing is important and where it “fits” in the big picture of your life.

Hang this piece of paper on the wall in front of your computer where you can see it at all times, even out of the corner of your eye. This serves as a focal point and visual reminder of your #1 project right now.

Step 3 – Write down the NEXT 3 (and only 3) Actions you need to take to reach the goal or complete the project.

You might have a master list of 15 action items. That’s fine. Keep it in a drawer and don’t pull it out again until you’ve completed the next 3 action items. This will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed. Write those 3 action items on a post-it note and paste it on the side of your monitor so they remain in front of you until they get done.

Don’t do anything else until these three action items are completed!

Now, a couple of thoughts on this VERY effective 3-step process:

  • If you must wait on someone else to do something – like graphics, layout, design, etc. – then move on to the next ACTION item immediately. Very rarely will you find yourself in a position with “nothing to do.”
  • Avoid distractions like: phone, TV, radio, and walk-in interruptions

The reason why this 3-step process works is very simple: it gets you very CLEAR on WHAT your #1 priority is; it gets you very CLEAR on WHY you’re taking action; it keeps you focused on ACTION while avoiding overwhelm.

Bottom Line: Focus, know why you’re taking action, and have the guts to go to work and do what you gotta do!
