Computer Security Threats
This week we’re trying somethig a little different…
I’ve come down with a nasty cold and you don’t want to hear my voice (I sound like “Froggy” from The Little Rascals), so we’re having a first in the history of “I Gotta Tell You”
We’re having a guest “tipster” this week on the topic of “computer security”.
Back when I got started with my first laptop in 1992, computer security meant not leaving your computer on the front seat of your car where somebody could steal it!
Fast forward to today and computer security is a HUGE issue… because thieves can not only steal your computer physically, they can steal your identity, finances, money, credit cards… basically your LIFE!
I’ve had some scares in the last couple years that have made me MUCH more aware of threats to my business and personal finances… and I’ve learned (the hard way) that consciously thinking about computer security needs to be second nature for all of us operating online.
Since I need to go take a nap and get over this cold, I’m going to turn things over to our guest for this week.
His name is Doug Partidge and he’s the co-author of “How to Secure Your Computer Using Free Tools and Smart Strategies”

Hi Jim,
Thank you for the opportunity to share some information with your valued subscribers.
The current state of security for Windows users is at an all time low… even the mainstream media have caught on.
Just about every single day there is another news story about Internet security woes.
The good news is that no one needs to be a victim.
My goal is to share three points from my ebook, “How to Secure Your Computer Using Free Tools and Smart Strategies” that your subscribers can use right now to increase their online security.
Tip #1 – Adware & Spyware Removal
One threat that’s quickly becoming the #1 menace on the Internet is “Spyware”.
In case you’re unfamiliar with Spyware – it’s monitoring software that’s secretly copied on to your PC.
Spyware has one purpose in mind: to sit quietly in the background and record as much information about you as possible.
This is extremely frightening for those of us who love to shop and bank online.
The good news is that there are free ways to deal with this menace.
I’m going to assume that everyone already has an anti-virus program (you do, right?).
In addition to this, you need a dedicated Adware/Spyware removal program – you can’t rely on your Anti-Virus program to find and remove all instances of Spyware.
Ad-Aware Personal from Lavasoft is an excellent free program.
Recommendation: run a full system scan at least once a week.
#2 – Email Security Tip: Send Encrypted Attachments
Email is fast, easy and convenient – what it is not is secure.
The reason email is not secure is because it is sent in what’s known as “clear text” – which makes it susceptible to electronic eavesdropping.
This is an unacceptable risk when you’re sending confidential or financial information.
Help is here:
=> http://www.iopus.com/freeware/secure-email/index.htm
Secure Email Attachment (“SEA”) from iOpus is free tool for creating password-protected and encrypted attachments.
The other benefit is that your recipient requires no special software on their end to decrypt your attachment – they only need the password used when creating the attachment.
Note: SEA only works on Windows computers.
#3 – Fight Spam With Temporary Disposable Email Accounts
=> http://www.mytrashmail.com/ — OK, this is one of my
favorite free resources around!
In brief, here’s how it works (and how it fights Spam).
Anytime you need to provide a valid email account to get a password or download link, instead of using your real email account (for fear of Spam) you can use an account @mytrashmail.com.
It could be anything – e.g. “doug1979@mytrashmail.com” – just like that – i.e. on-the-fly, the mailbox will be created for you. There is no need to pre-create your account.
Please visit their website to get a detailed explanation of the service.
One important caveat: since a password is not required to access these mailboxes – this is definitely not the place to send any confidential or financial information.

Have a great weekend!
Just Plain Cool Stuff…
Jim Edwards here with an article I think you’ll get a few
things out of…
This article will run in tomorrow’s paper, but you get the
“scoop” today
Here’s what it’s all about:
1. It shows you an easy and proven way to access your
computer while on the road… without lugging a laptop.
2. It details a way you can hold virtual meetings and
collaborate with others over the net.
But here’s what it also shows you that most people would
miss… unless I point it out.
What I didn’t point out in the newspaper article (since
it’s to a general interest newspaper audience) is that this
article reveals a tool you can actually use to create
products with a joint-venture partner…. even if you’re
separated by long distances!
Imagine jumping on the phone and your computer and, using a
screen capture software like Camtasia, collaborating to
create a “killer” information product.
That’s the power of the information in today’s article for
you as an information marketer… these tools open up a
whole new world of product creation in cooperation with
others.
So, I hope you enjoy the article.
If you like it, feel free to post it on your site, in your
blog, or in your newsletter or autoresponder (see simple
reprint instructions at the end).
Have a great week,
Jim

Access Your PC From The Road
– by Jim Edwards

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Have you ever sat in front of your computer and wished you
could show someone else what appeared on your screen?
Maybe you were experiencing a problem, or couldn’t figure
out how to make something work, but you knew if someone
else could see what was happening on your screen, they
could help you fix the problem immediately.
Ever had a phone conversation with someone about a
particular business topic, but you just couldn’t “connect”
with your ideas because it was too hard to explain over the
phone?
Now, visualize jumping on the phone with that same person
and literally sharing your computer’s desktop to
collaborate, discuss, and create virtually anything
together, even if you are separated by thousands of miles.
Though this may sound like an episode of Star Trek, remote
computer sharing is actually a daily business reality.
Imagine you need to take a trip and you either don’t want
to or can’t take your computer.
The thought of emails piling up for days makes you crazy
and you also need to monitor some things on your pc.
Instead of trying to lug your laptop (or fit your desktop
into your suitcase), you can use “remote desktop” software
that allows you to access your computer through the
Internet from any other computer in the world.
One of the most common remote desktop services is
GoToMyPC.com, which provides a safe and secure way for you
to go down to the local internet café, log on, and access
your office or home computer just like sitting at your own
desk.
Now, before you panic and think anyone can access your
computer, let me explain security.
First, you log in to the GoToMyPC.com website with a
username and password.
Once logged in, you then click a link to log onto your PC,
which will then ask you for another password.
GoToMyPC.com has even thought of a solution for those of
you worried about people looking over your shoulder as you
enter your passwords on a public computer or if the
computer you use might carry a keystroke logger.
Before leaving home, you can program in a series of up to
99 passwords that only work one time.
This means even if someone watches you log into your
computer or records your keystrokes, the password you used
won’t work again.
If a would-be thief tries to access your computer too many
times, GoToMyPC.com will shut down all access attempts to
your PC.
The benefits of remotely accessing your PC from the road
are numerous, but the bottom line is that it enables you to
use your computer from the road like you never left home.
For example: while traveling to a conference this weekend,
my wife (and business partner) accessed our office computer
from my laptop and, instead of the usual pile of 4,000
emails that would normally await after 5 days away, we just
picked up this morning like we’d never been gone.
The same company that offers GoToMyPC.com also offers a
service called GoToMeeting.com which allows you to remotely
host a meeting where multiple users can share and
collaborate on a single computer desktop.
This service makes it super simple to provide online
training, do software demos, and even make complete sales
presentations.
I personally use both of these services and find them easy,
reliable and well worth the price.

Can You Survive In An Online World?
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Can You Survive In An Online World?
– by Jim Edwards
© Jim Edwards – All Rights reserved
http://www.thenetreporter.com
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Do you have the skills to make it in a computer driven,
increasingly online world?
Your immediate, knee-jerk reaction may be “Yes! Of course I
have the skills.
I know how to send and receive email and surf the web.
I can even download and install files.”
Well, three or four years ago, email, Web surfing and
downloading files qualified you as “electronically
literate,” but not any more! Computer and online survival
skills now encompass much more than that.
Surviving in an online world involves maintaining a high
degree of “electronic literacy,” which means focusing on
and developing skills in the following areas:
** Personal Computer skills **
In the old days of 1998, the ability to use a computer,
keyboard and mouse rated anyone as computer-literate.
In fact, you were a real pro if you could burn a CD, scan
documents and manipulate digital pictures.
Fast forward to today and “personal computer skills”
carries a whole new meaning. You must know how to maintain
and update not only anti-virus, but “anti-spyware,” and
firewall software too.
You also need to understand how operating with Windows ME,
or 2000, or XP will affect your ability to use certain
software along with specific security precautions to avoid
trouble from hackers.
** Internet Skills **
In the bygone era of 1998, friends considered you an online
genius if you possessed basic surfing and navigation
skills.
They watched in awe as you used search engines like
InfoSeek.com (a long-defunct search engine) to find and
download programs, pictures, and information on specific
topics.
Now electronic literacy means the ability to set up,
upload, and maintain basic web pages and blogs.
It also means understanding terms such as “RSS” and “news
aggregator” because that’s the next generation of how
information will get disseminated online (and it arrives
for the masses this year).
** Email Skills **
Perhaps the most deceptively simple of all the areas of
electronic literacy, email actually presents the most
challenges for keeping up with the times.
Previously, clicking the “send and receive” button meant
you were proficient at using email.
Now, because of spam, viruses and “phishing scams”
(identity theft schemes delivered through email), email
requires a whole new set of skills, “street smarts” and
software just to survive.
You must understand how to use an email “preview” program
such as MailWasher.net to eliminate spam and virus email
messages before they ever reach your computer.
You also must learn to protect your identity and avoid
“phishing scams” by learning to recognize and defend
against online con-artist tactics.
** Buy or Borrow Expertise **
Though you should constantly upgrade your skills through
personal education, nobody can do or know it all (except
maybe your know-it-all bother in law).
The good news is that you can always buy or borrow someone
else’s expertise to solve any online challenge.
A prime example of outsourcing in the consumer market is
all the little stores popping up in strip malls to help you
sell your stuff on eBay.
Through outsourcing, online survival skills can also mean
taking what was previously the exclusive realm of computer
geeks and making it as easy as dropping off the dry
cleaning.

How do I stop people stealing my ebook?…
Question:
Jim, I’ve completed and published to PDF my 1st Ebook. Your
lessons in 7 days to were excellent. The advice on free
publishing for the 1st six was appreciated.
(ref: “How To Write and Publish Your Own eBook… in as little as 7 Days”
I am unclear on one thing however and wonder if you could
help me understand it.
I plan to use ClickBank as a credit card processor and
sales agent along with my own website as I move toward
affiliations. ClickBank wants two web addresses, one for a
“sales pitch” page and the second for a “thank you page.
That alone isn’t a problem but I’m struggling to understand
a couple of things.
After completing a sale does ClickBank direct the buyer to
my thank you page and is the product downloaded from there?
That’s the way I have it set up but I have not published my
sited to the web yet. If that’s the case and I have a
separate website for thank you /delivery, how do I protect
it. If someone comes across it can’t they simply download
my book?
Thanks,
Marty
Answer:
Hi Marty,
You basically have 3 choices when it comes to ebook
security
1. You can use a locking program like Armand’s
www.ebookgenerator.com or www.cb-extract.com to “secure”
the file… however, you can create more time expense in
increased customer service than you save in security.
(Not saying you will, I’m saying you *can*.)
2. You can lock the PDF file with a password… but then
people can just pass on the password with the file… so I
don’t recommend it (though I do recommend securing your PDF
against allowing people to copy text or comment).
3. What I do is just change the download URL on occasion to
keep people from being able to pass that around… that
cuts down on mass stealing of ebooks.
PLUS, if you don’t EVER link to the download page from
anywhere on your website and make it a hard to guess page
name (678dhfYU76.html instead of download.html), then you
should never have to worry about anyone “accidentally”
finding your download page.
My bottom line opinion is that you can’t stop a
*determined* thief… so you just make it hard for the
casual thief to do much damage, and you focus on serving
the customer… 98% of the people out there are honest and
good… and we just focus on them.
I hope that helps
Jim
P.S. I did a humorous little piece on this in my blog
“Smacker Explains Basic eBook Security”
Ebook Security & ClickBank Affiliate Pop-Up’s
|
One of the things it seems get stuck in every affiliate’s craw is the use of pop-up windows on a merchant’s site… especially if it’s a ClickBank Merchant. I must get 2 emails a day from affiliates asking me to take down my popup window (which ain’t happening)! Below, I explain how a merchant using ClickBank can have a pop-up and also satisfy affiliates who don’t want popup’s on the landing page… but then I also explain WHY it is STUPID to do it and how one extra step by an affiliate would probably DOUBLE their success and everyone would make more money! In the second video, my dog, Smacker, hijacks the "JIMBOTron" in order to teach you the 3 basic ways you can secure your ebook against theft. It’s a light-hearted look at a very serious topic.. and I think you’ll enjoy it |

Niche Software Steals Microsoft’s Thunder
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Niche Software Steals Microsoft’s Thunder
– by Jim Edwards
© Jim Edwards – All Rights reserved
http://www.IGottaTellYou.com/blog/
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
When you think of software and personal computers (PCs),
you think Microsoft.
The global software giant dominates the PC market in both
penetration and pocketbook.
It seems you can’t go a single day without seeing at least
one news story and several advertisements for Microsoft or
a Microsoft product.
But that doesn’t mean Microsoft dominates in every corner
of the market; in fact, as the software behemoth gets
bigger, numerous niche software offerings spring up to fill
in the gaps left in Microsoft’s wake.
As you’ll see, a couple of these niche software programs
have managed to either beat Microsoft to the punch, or even
steal market share away from the seemingly invincible
company.
** FeedDemon **
FeedDemon software ($29.95) enables you to subscribe to and
read RSS Feeds (Real Simple Syndication).
RSS has emerged as the preferred way to share news and
other content with subscribers across the Internet without
the use of email.
The advantage to subscribers: as news, blogs, or other
content updates somewhere online, subscribers receive
virtually instant notification just by opening up their
reader.
This represents a huge time savings since subscribers can
receive updates without surfing individual sites to chase
down stories or wading through piles of spam to find the
content they actually want.
The advantage to publishers: no worrying about whether
email notifications, news releases, or blog updates made it
past the spam filters or unreliable mail servers.
Though many free RSS reader software packages exist (just
do a search on Google.com for “free rss reader”), FeedDemon
offers an unmatched suite of tools that enable serious RSS
subscribers the power and flexibility to mix and match
feeds, including the new “POD Casting” craze where content
providers syndicate audio content (MP3) over the web.
Available from www.bradsoft.com/feeddemon/, FeedDemon sets
the standard for RSS readers in a market that Microsoft has
yet to even address with any of its software products.
I’ll make a daring prediction here: watch for Microsoft or
another large player to purchase FeedDemon rather than try
to reinvent the wheel and build a product brand themselves.
** FireFox Web Browser **
Security problems always seem to plague the Microsoft
Internet Explorer (IE) Web browser.
In fact, last year the problem got so bad, it forced
Microsoft to release one of the largest free software
upgrades (Service Pack 2) in the history of computing.
According to both OneStat.com and Webside Story, two of the
Web’s leading Web analytics companies, Microsoft’s IE
market share has dipped below 90%.
See actual stats from WebSide Story Here:
http://www.websidestory.com/services-solutions/datainsights/spotlight.html
In response to serious security threats to Internet
Explorer, an upstart browser named FireFox from Mozilla.org
took off like a rocket ship in late 2004.
Available free from www.Mozilla.org, FireFox offers not
only a full-featured Web browser without the security
problems, but also a number of features not available on
Internet Explorer.
Probably the most popular feature Firefox offers over IE is
“Tabbed Browsing,” which enables you to open multiple Web
pages without opening multiple windows.
Firefox also limits harmful Active-X controls and pop-up
windows.
Firefox tends towards a less forgiving attitude on HTML
coding and may display some Web pages awkwardly, where IE
displays most pages as the designer intended.
Despite this, Firefox makes an excellent browser and
Microsoft should take heed that market dominance doesn’t
last forever once consumers see a viable alternative.
And the lesson in all of this for all you would-be
entrepreneurs out there with the next great idea?
It doesn’t matter how big or small your organization, it
always comes back to a simple formula: Meet the needs and
solve the problems of a specific niche audience better than
the next guy and you’ll be the winner!

This week’s episode of "I Gotta Tell You" addresses 2 critical issues for anyone who publishes and sells information online (or who plans to in the near future).

Win a copy of Jim Edwards’ products…
Jim Edwards here with a way for you to win some of my
products just by sharing your ideas.
=> http://www.AskJimEdwards.com/upsellcontest.html
Here’s the scoop…
My friend Yanik Silver has been after me for several years
to start offering up-sells on my various websites.
An up-sell is when you offer someone the chance to buy an
additional, related product at the point of purchase.
Probably the most famous example of an up-sell is when you
go to McDonald’s and they ask you “Would you like fries with
that?” (That one phrase made McDonalds’ owners rich.)
Anyway, I don’t have any up-sells on ANY of my sites… and
this is not a smart business decision on my part.
Not only is it costing me money, but it’s also costing my
affiliates money in the larger commissions they could earn
if I took this simple step.
So, to correct this problem, I’ve decided to hold a contest.
… but not just any contest!
This is a contest where plenty of people can win, and
EVERYONE has a very good chance of winning
Announcing the
“What’s Your Best Idea For An Up Sell Contest”
The rules are very simple… you can enter as many times as
you want… and, like I said, everyone has a *really* good
chance of winning a prize(s).
Get all the details here:

To your success!

PS – Head on over and enter right now… I won’t hold this
contest open for very long and you don’t want to miss out!
